clueless about internet

Myself, my partner and my son have lived in a uni halls of resisdence for 3 years now and had no line rental, only contract mobiles with good deal with phones4u.

I have paid £40 for the internet from the Uni for each year and this has been a quick, unlimited service, so £3.33 per calender month.

We will be moving out at the end of Aug into a rented property and could be there between 12 to 18 months whilst I do a masters. We don't really want a landline, but if I have to, or its cheaper to get one with internet then I would, and only use it for 0845 number etc....

Since I will be studying I will be online for 4 - 5 hours some days doing research. I download journal articles and every now and again use BBCI player.

The house we are probably moving into doesn't have cable (whatever that is)

I have one stationary computer and no laptop.

I've heard of dongles, but don't know much about them. I don't need Wyfi, but again, if its cheaper then it might be best for me.

I just want a cheap deal with enough usage with it so I'm not paying anything ontop of it.

I was hoping to pay about £5 / month with no landline costs, is this possible?

do I have to pay for a landline I won't be using?

Unfortunately I think you will have to get a landline... you're looking at around £20/month. I suggest you read this: http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/phones/cheap-broadband

There are two ways to get broadband without a landline:
    1. Get a cable connection
    2. Use a mobile broadband (3G) dongle

You've said that cable isn't an option, and personally I wouldn't want to rely on a 3G dongle for internet. They are fine as a backup or for when you're on the move, but I don't really find them fast or reliable enough to use all the time. It's not much cheaper than a landline anyway - Three's 5GB/month service costs £15/month.

I suppose if you have a neighbour with Wifi who is willing to share their connection in exchange for a share of the cost, you could get a Wifi adapter for your computer and use that - as long as the signal is strong enough to get a decent connection.
Let's settle this like gentlemen: armed with heavy sticks
On a rotating plate, with spikes like Flash Gordon
And you're Peter Duncan; I gave you fair warning

the house we are moving into has a landline already, so I assume it has a phone number with it. I've looked at talktalk. What you do people think of them? Isn't it the carphone warehouse?

http://www.talktalk.co.uk/newlines says 'Huge savings - getting a new line from us is just £59.99 (that's 50% cheaper than BT!)'

Will I have to pay for this as there is already a line in the house, but it has not actually been installed for me?

What do you think of this deal?

Is there anyway of getting extra money off / cashback / free months / free connection fee?

    thanks

Best deal will be on a LLU service, what LLU deals are available on your exchange? Put your number into samknows.com and see what LLU operators are serving your exchange.
O2 do a good deal @ £7.34 if you are on an LLU exchange and have an O2 mobile, which gives you a fiver discount. Or look at Plusnet @ £5.99 if you are on a market 3 exchange.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
