Whats the best deal at the moment for an i-fone 3gs,,,i am about to upgrade from my present fone..thank you in advance ,,can i also keep my exhisting number which isnt on 02 or orange ???

the best deal is to buy the phone outright £440 and then either use the PAYG sim (free internet and wifi for a year) or get an O2 simplicity SIM £20pm.
(this saves roughly £250)

or

O2 24month contract - £44pm tariff for 9 months and then downgrade to £35pm tariff for remainder making the iphone free

on the £35pm tariff and the 18 month tariff you have to pay extra for the phone.

it's cheaper to buy the phone and get a sim or do PAYG but this is hard for a lot of people as it's £440
with simplicity sim eg 12 months @ £20pm
= £240 SIM only + £440phone= £680

3gs phone 24months contract:
£35pm x 24months = £840 + phone £87.11 = £927.11

3gs on 24month contract but starting on £44pm x 9mnths then dropping to £35pm tariff for remaining 15mnths = £925 (phone is free but pay more in tariff)

18month contract the phone is £184 on £35pm contract and £87 on £44pm contract.

It's wether you have the disposable income to buy the phone outright as this is the cheapest way to do it. I'm doing it like this but currently out of stock evetywhere! typical!

You're not really comparing like with like though as far as cost is concerned.

With one option you have 12 months use and with another 18/24 months use.

For example if you cost it out over 18 months.

PAYG phone = £440
Simplicity Sim at £20pm for 18 months = £360
Total = £800

£35pm contract for 18 months = £630
Phone cost = £184
Total = £814

So the difference is £14 for the same usage rather than £250 which is not a great deal.

The only real reason to go the PAYG route is to avoid the 18/24 month contract so that you are free to upgrade to the newest model next year.

yes i suppose you're right however a big bonus for the sim only is that there is no tie in, i was doing 12 months as a similar example.
Only needs 30 days notice and you're free. For me this is great

Yep - you'll be all ready to go for the new one next year.

Remember that you do miss out on the free WiFi and visual voicemail if you go the Simplicity route. These may not be important for you anyway.

i went into the apple store yesterday to enquire about this and he said visual voicemail is just seeing who the messgae was from on screen put you can still pick up your messages as normal.
Wifi is only for places like McD's and Wetherspoons, you get unlimited internet with the SIM so shouldn't really make that much difference. All the apple advisors have bought their iphones this way and have had no problems.

Yes that's true. I don't get that many voicemail messages so it isn't a great problem anyway.

The WiFi at McDonald's and Wetherspoons is free anyway so you will be able to use that as you will if you want to use any free WiFi hotspot or your WiFi at home.

Correct me if I am wrong but if I got a simplicity SIM wouldn't I then have to swap SIM cards if I want to use the phone to surf?
