I love Naples the place has a real buzz about it, and some great restaurants - just watch your wallet, they're are plenty of pickpockets about.0

Naples is a no no, Sorrento is much better.
Easy for Capri (fantastic), Herculaneum and Pompeii.
We did Herculaneum first and then Pompeii. Think the return train fare was about 6 euros.
Although Herculaneum is a strange place, you leave the train and walk down the road to the site. And on every corner there will be a group of men just standing around doing nothing!!
Also, the market stinks of fish. i know it is a fish market mainly, but still.
Get the fastcraft to Capri and just soak up the place.0 -
Thanks for you help everyone, Sorrento it is then!
If you think of anything else you think might help please post it.
Cheers,
B
If you search this forum you will find lots of threads about the area from the last 6 months or so. You don't need a car at all because the Circumvesuviana train route covers all the destination you require http://www.vesuviana.it/web/en/homepage
You can easily see all of Pompeii in a day so on the second day you could either relax, visit Herculaneum or take a trip over to Capri or Ischia.
But most of all, if you've never visited the area before, you WILL have fun! It's a fantastic and fascinating part of Italy.
I spent an full day at Pompeii one sunday and my highlights were sneaking into the brothel and relaxing in the sun in the main ampitheatre listening to 'Pink Floyd Live At Pompeii'. Bliss!0 -
Just got back from Sorrento on Friday - fab place - and half an hour by train to Pompeii - though take an umbrella!!! It was 36 degrees when we went and there is no shade or facilities inside although there are street water fountains to top up bottles. We spent 3.5hours there and didn't even touch the sides, though sunstroke was a risk so we had to leave. Get there as early as is possible - it opens at 8.30am.
We stayed at the Villagio Verde - a short walk out of town but we found it was cheaper to book with Thomsons than direct.

....and if you do go to Capri....go on to AnaCapri and get the chairlift to the top....wonderfully peaceful after the hustle and bustle....
I loved the Villa San Michele http://www.capri.net/en/c/villa-san-michele-20
