Naples/Pompeii

IUm planning a long weekend trip to Italy, the main attraction being a visit to the remains of Pompeii.

Easyjet go to somewhere near Naples for a very reasonable fare so....
Do any of you have some recommendations for where to stay? I dont want to hire a car unless absolutely necessary.

Well, personally I wouldn't stay in Naples that's the first thing ! Horrible place

You can get an airport bus to the main railway station in Naples and from there get the Circumvesuviana railway to Sorrento which is a much nicer place to stay. It also has the advantage of being on the same line to Pompeii and Herculaneum. Fares are very reasonable

Loads of hotels in Sorrento. My 17year old son and his friend found a cheap one in Sorrento (sorry can't remember the name) when they did a similar trip to Pompeii. My point being hotels are plentiful and easy to find on the internet.

Don't even think of hiring a car. That would just be suicide in Naples !
  • There are a couple of nice hotels in Naples overlooking the bay, one of them being a Marriott but they are pricey. If you don't want to pay out for these though your best bet would be Sorrento, as Loobs 40 suggests. There are also other trips you can do from there easily such as Capri.

Easyjet go to Naples Airport which is handy. The tube line doesn't go there (yet) but buses will take you in to Naples itself. Don't book a tour but do it yourself as you can go at your own pace and save money into the bargain.

Sorrento is a very good base for sightseeing. The downside is little or no beach and quite a lot of traffic. You can get an Artecard which covers public transport for 3 days including the airport bus and free entrance to two sites then half price for 27 euros. As adults pay 11 euros to get into Pompeii and 20 euros for a ticket covering Pompeii and Herculaneum it's good value. If you want to avoid the hassle of going into Naples there are direct busses between Naples Airport and Sorrento. About 8 a day costing 10 euros single.

Another vote for Sorrento! So easy to get to both Pompeii and Herculaneum from there on the train. We much preferred Herculaneum to Pompeii...it's smaller, (Pompeii is HUGE), more complete with stunning wall paintings and not as crowded as Pompeii. Don't believe what they say about it being 'dangerous' to go to H on your own...stick to the main street and it's fine. Much better than being herded along with a tour group. A hat and loads of water are a must - it gets v v hot! Are you going to do the walk up Vesuvius too?

Hope you have a great time :j

Haven't done it, but would love to and I would agree that the advice given above is what is pretty much given everywhere. Being a Maradona fan, I'd like to stop one night in napoli, and also to try the pizza - apparently the best in Italy, but no hardship to keep trying various places looking for the best of the best!

    The amalfi coast looks amazing.

I'd get a rough guide or lonely planet, maybe from the library or second hand on ebay - out of date doesn't really matter - check out the hotels through tripadviser and those guidebooks websites have forums for more info.
