Would you allow a 14 year old to go camping overnight with friends of same age

Yes I would. Although it would be much less worrying without the older sister going too!

I think that we are too over protective of our children and do not let them explore or experience life. Children need to venture out and develop common sense .
Its not easy to let go but you need to trust your son and his friends . As long as you take steps to make things safe ,ie, mobile phone to be switched on at all times, group to stay together at all times and nothing stronger than lemonade to be consumed.

I'll add a sixth formers view to it.

Personally if I was an adult I wouldn't allow it to be at the field. During my lessons when I was around the age of 14 or so people in my classes used to organize camping in field trips and this often involved the ideas of 'stupid pranks' or a 'substantial' amount of booze. I never went to any of these as it wasn't my scene but I received so many invitations to them that I lost count.

Camping in the back garden is a whole different story though, they've still got their 'camping experience' but your mind can be at rest knowing he's fine and you can check up on him through the window any time you want.

If I were you I'd say you'll make a 'compromise' where as you'll let him and his friends go camping as long as it's in your garden and you'll promise to leave them alone for the night and not bother them.

I'm just wondering why he's so against the idea of camping in the garden? To me it's ringing 'alarm bells' that there's something quite not right about this idea, whether it be more 17/18 year olds going as or something.

As I say this is just my opinion, everyone thinks differently so I'm sure there's going to be many people who disagree/agree with me. Go with whatever your heart tells you to do :).

DD went when she was 15 but her dad went and made sure they were all set up ok and then walked the dog around the area later in the evening to have a sneaky check on them. They all had mobiles and were told to call, even for the slightest problem.

There was five of them - four girls and one boy, but the boy is gay so there was no hanky panky!

All was fine, but they never did it again because they were cold and the ground was too hard! :rotfl:

I have a 14 year old boy and there is no way I would let him. He is sensible and so are his friends but you never know who may be around looking for trouble in the middle of the night.

    Like werewolves and stuff? :)

you made me think back many years and my friend was already a seasoned camper with the Scouts. The camped in woodland near a stream miles from home (different town) and he was 11 years old if that.

Give 'em mobiles then just go there around 10pm shake a few bushes and see who is the first to phone home :)

    That's cruel!

    Funny...

    but cruel! :rotfl:

No Chance - they'll be out of their heads on booze by 11 O'clock - probably bought by the 17 year old sister!!

15 minutes away from home in a field on their own at 14 with no house nearby. Do you know for definite there is a mobile signal if they have an emergency? It's not across the road - I'm thinking it must be a good 2 or 3 miles away?

It sounds a bit too far away for their first camping experience together without adults within easy reach.
