Just been told plants are unhygienic!

Bit odd... someone's just visited and upon seeing plants on the kitchen window sill said I should take them away because they're "unhygienic in a kitchen environment". They've raised this several times before but I thought they were joking since I didn't realise it was possible for someone to be so thick.

This time it was fairly obvious it was not a joke.

Is this person deluded or just misinformed? :rotfl:

I don't believe there is an issue since all my life there have been plants around the house (and kitchen/dining room) and I never knowingly suffered ill-health due to it.

Any useful info to throw back at the nitwit would be nice! :D

ha ha ha. probably they might attract the odd little fly thing, but whatever - so does fruit!
Not got any science on it I'm afraid, but it surely can't be any different to fruit?
Am not witty enough to put something cool and informative here:o :o

If the person has had to do courses on hygiene for commercial premises, this is what will have been taught. Home kitchens don't have to meet the same standards. I would counter with the problems so many younger people have these days because their immune systems haven't been exposed to enough challenges while they were growing up.

Tell them that plants clean the air and help us all breathe which is a fact that outweighs any negatives imho

Ahh but what happens if that pot of chives falls over onto your take away chinese Mmmm? Compost everywhere. We need to consider all the risks ;)
Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes.

Oh yes, but I've never had chives fall into a takeaway ;)

Either tell them where to go or suggest they get counselling for their OCD/phobias.

Lots of things that we do at home wouldn't be allowed in a commercial kitchen for example using the same sink to wash your hands in as to prepare food, having a washing machine in the kitchen, eating in the kitchen.
    I'm not cynical I'm realistic :p

(If a link I give opens pop ups I won't know I don't use windows)

Venus fly-trap, with part-digested flies can't be good.
  • No venus fly trap, with live flies wandering round kitchen has to be worse!
I could dream to wide extremes, I could do or die: I could yawn and be withdrawn and watch the world go by.
