OH I'm loving this
My table and chairs are oak. Not posh, I won them on EBay for 16 quid. The lady I bought it off had listed it in bathrooms so I got lucky there. It's an old thing and the chairs are really worn but I don't care, I've got a 40 year old white tablecloth on top of it so it looks tidy.
I had a really good one, a modern beech one with 6 chairs too.. But that's now stored upstairs for DD for when she buys her own house next year.
My three and two seater settees were from EBay too, they are nice though, they were £125 for the pair, from an old lady who'd bought it from M&S and changed her mind.
In my bedroom I have the old red curtains that used to be in this room. The curtains in here are second hand. :cool:I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Old style MoneySaving boards.

ooo i belong here too, my house is full of stuff that people have given me as i never say no as they may stop asking
When i moved from a one bed flat the removal man said he hadn't seen so much furniture in such a small space, i moved into a two bed house which looks and feels so homely as everything is worn and lived in, just how i like it

Me too! Moved into our house 7 years ago and we were going to do the works, new carpets, decorating, new kitchen, new bathroom, etc etc. Trouble is we didnt really have any money to do it and I wont add to the debts I am trying to pay off.I love my house, its clean, comfy and homely, but it certainly wouldnt get photographed for one of those house and home magazines!!!0

Thank you for this thread!
Nearly all my furniture is old, I have my grandmother's dining table, my computer desk is an old chest of drawers with the top drawer in upside down for the keyboard, my kitchen is somebody's cast off from when they had theirs done, my microwave cost £4 from a jumble sale......I could go on and on!
I do like the look of these "show homes", but could never live in one, I try and keep mine clean and as tidy as two teenage daughters allow, but smart it isn't!
My daughters friends like the house because it's" homely", and that's the way it will stay.0 -
This is me as well. I've been living with my boyfriend for just a little over a year and we moved into an unfurnished flat. So, we have two computer desks-one from a charity shop, one which belonged to my Dad, then sister. My filing cabinet came from when my brother was doing office clearances and would have gone to the tip.
We just got a "new" sofa, it was my sisters, she didn't have enough room for two large sofas in her new house, so I've got it for £30 M&S vouchers from survey sites. Most of what we have has belonged to someone else, but that doesn't matter to us. We are comfortable with what we've got and its our home.Grocery budget in 2023 £2279.18/£2700Grocery budget in 2022 £2304.76/£2400Grocery budget in 2021 £2107.86/£2200Grocery budget in 2020 £2193.02/£2160Saving for Christmas 2023 #15 £ 90/ £3650 -
my mum gave me her old bathroom cupboard unit - it sits in my bedroom holding towels.
No matter how many times it's been painted/cleaned...it still smells of witch hazel!:jFlylady and proud of it:j0 -
The bed in my spare room is an iron one with a lattice type base.It was second hand given to me in 1969 from my neibours cousin who had raised five sons at various times in it I worked it out that it was made around 1932.Over the years I have changed the mattress a couple of times but its still going strong after 77 years.Still got my DD stickers on from when she was in her teens she is now a grown up Mum herself of 42. In my porch is a mirror I bought in 1970 in Woolworths at Dartford cost me 7/6d (37 and a half p)Still as good as new and has hung by the front door in all of my homes. I'm not one for buying new stuff, my sofa cost me £280.00 complete with two armchairs in 1977 and my friends husband made it for me as he worked in Alstons in Essex at the time .It came complete with a double bed folded up inside . I bought a set of covers for it about 10 years ago and they get removed and washed every three months or so. My home is very child friendly and I don't get stressed if things get spilt. Its easy enough to wipe things up and I'd rather have a happy child, than a fearful one to come into my house. I did buy a reclining chair two years ago as I was having chemo and it meant that I could sleep more comfortably downstairs in it .But I nearly died when I knew the price.Still it will see me out thats for sure.
Life is for living and enjoying and so what if my stuff doesn't match my family come to see me not my cups and saucers.0 -
Oh yes - I belong here too! OH used to find some fantastic bargains at our local auction house until it closed down last year (Boo!)
We've got two beautiful green leather armchairs at our fireplace which cost £30 - we could have had four for that price but OH thought we didn't have space! I could have made space!
As Fozz said, I do admire 'show homes' but I could never live in one. I know people who are always changing their furniture or decorating - I just think they must be awfully unhappy not to be able to settle with what they've got.
By the way, my mum still has the chairs from a three piece suite which is over 40 years old - recovered but still very comfy. The great declutter 2010Money neutral and thrifty gifty for Christmas 2010 :xmassmile0 -
This thread is very me.
I love old furniture, have a fireside chair that belonged to my grandmother, it was heading to the tip until I rescued it. I have had it recovered and it looks great.
When I moved in with OH there was a lovely old dressing table in the garage, now it has pride of place in our bedroom.Much nicer that anything I could buy new today I love it.
My best find was a glass cabinet in a charity shop for £10.00, now hold my teaset I bought on Ebay.
Our house may not be 'in fashion' but it home and we love it."Always bear in mind, that very little indeed is necessary for living a happy life" Marcus Aurelius.0
