The shabby, shabby thread

Options
Yep this thread is dedicated to those of us who really don't mind what our furniture looks like, as long as our wardrobes hold our clothes and our table stays up when we eat...

we never turn down a free item of furniture, and while we may think about painting it, its still the same in 5 years time...

Skips are shopping centres and neighbours cast offs are our gold.....

and the furniture that looks old IS OLD

I got a fab chair from the tip last week, an oak armchair. We put the cushions in the washing machine and the colours have come up a treat. I've made myself a little reading corner in the dining room.
Dining room sounds too posh for me, it's where we have our dinner ;)

But when I did an Ebay search I found one and it was listed at £72! :)

    Love it...............:rotfl:
My house is full of stuff thats either really old (pine dresser for a start) or was free and 'I keep meaning to paint it I really do' stuff.
My computer desk is a melamine one but I did get around to painting it in the old fashioned scumble fashion.............looks ok to me anyway.
Tools are kept in an old oak sideboard and glass fronted cupboard that was once in the kitchen
I would be unstoppable if only I could get started !

    Ah yes...
I think I belong in here.
Nothing in my house really matches anything else.

    But it is home

I would love to have a colour co-ordinated, tidy, clean and organised home.....but I can't be bothered really, there are too many interesting things to be done in this world.

We were 39 years married yesterday and have never bought a new couch...my spendaholic brother changes his mind on his furniture every so often and we get the throw out...current suite is black leather and will be covered with throws when needed until he has his next buying fit!

  • Yes this is me too. If it aint broke don't fix it. Dining room suite been in fashion twice since I bought it second hand 35 years ago. Sofa, was mum's. 2 tv's due to next door up grading. The only things I have bought new were kids beds and that was 16 years ago when they graduated from secondhand cots.
What I will say, and I sound like my own parents now. Is that things dont seem to be made to last now. It doesn't matter what we do to the dining room table. Use it as a pasting table, painting table, son has done some soldering on it. If I had bought it new I would be forever nagging about it. but I don't care. Its still got legs and a top. though we are on the third set of secondhand chairs.

I got the base for our dinning table from the dump. Our table had legs and I wanted a pedestal as their are 5 of us and somebody always got the leg, happened to be at the dump just as somebody was getting a pedestal out of their car - what luck.

When Grandma died at Easter I inherited the bottom of her dresser as a shoe cupboard and 2 chairs - DS2 uses one at the desk in his room and we have one in the living room, I love furniture with a meaning and history to it.
