I have been raising money in aid of Cancer Research UK for almost 4 years through some interesting campaigns that include the sale of collectable bears - some accessorised for the event, some signed by celebrities, some unique in other ways. The bears and other collectables are sold through eBay and through my website. So far I have raised over £30,000 for Cancer Research UK (Registered Charity No: 1089464). All of my fundraising is done under the name 'CHERISH' with the knowledge of and authority from the charity.
I realise that I am probably not allowed to post links to either of those on this board but I am registered for this year's official Cancer Research UK Race for Life. I have a Justgiving page set up to help me raise further sponsorship for this event from people who would like to support the cause but who do not wish to buy any bears!

"Over 549,000 women took part in our national Race for Life series in 2005. Together they raised over £33.5million for our life saving research. This year there are over 230 Race for Life events throughout the UK."
If you would like to sponsor me through this secure fundraising page please click here to visit the web page where you can read more about the event and my fundraising endeavours.

Thank you very much for reading and to Martin for opening this new charity forum. It is much appreciated.

Hi Sue, I will also be doing Race for Life this year, its my third year running and I love it. I was the original couch potato until 2004 when my sister asked me if I wanted to join her in the run. We done it to mark what should have been my mams 60th birthday, but unfortunately she died of cancer at the young age of 51.
Keep up the good work Sue, and I may be interested in a few bears when I get my finances in order.
Good luck in your fundraising.

Lots of luck to you Bulchy!
I think that one of the most positive things about the Race for Life event is the camaraderie between the women of all ages taking part. What started me off in 2002 was the leaflet that dropped out from a magazine telling me that I could register as a walking participant or as a runner. I was nervous about taking part incase the realiy was that the majority of women would run after all, but I need not have worried. Yes, there ARE the 'whippets' but there are also plenty of women walking all of the route - some in groups, some alone. Some do what I do and walk some and run some - I set my own personal target each year.
It is also very encouraging to have supporters of either sex around the route cheering us on!
I do this for my own personal reasons of loss of family members and friends to cancer as well as to raise funds and awareness for the charity. Each year I carry several names on my back - some 'in memory' and some 'in celebration'. One day I hope that the second list will be far, far longer than the first.

Erm, I don't mean to sound like a killjoy, but posts read best if just posted in plain black-on-white. A screenful of pink text is really quite painful.Matched betting profit: ~ £30,000 since Jan 2005
Quidco cashback: ~ £3,500 since May 2005
Topcashback: ~ £2,100 since Oct 2005
Rpoints: ~ £600 since June 2004
It's only fraud if you get caught.
I don't offer advice by PM so please post your questions in the appropriate thread.0 -

Hi, I too am doing the RACE FOR LIFE this year. This will be my first year and I'm not sure what to expect.
Most of my family havve died of cancer (both sets of GP's, my brother as a baby and my dad died last April.) His anniversary is in 2 weeks and the closer it comes, the worse I am feeling, so I'm hoping that this will help somewhat to coming to terms with it.
I am doing it in Heaton Park, Manchester, and they are also doing a Mens race in aid of the Bobby Moore fund (I think it is), so all you men can come along to and do your part.
As much as I have suffered recently with the deaths in my family, I still hold out HOPE that one day they will find a cure. If me walking around apark in the summer can help in a tiny tiny way, then I can keep that HOPE, for my family and for all of yours.
Good Luck to everyone doing it, and to everyone who helps a charity in someway.0 -
Good luck in your first Race for Life, meerustar!
I think that the men's event that you mention is the 'Run for Moore' event, organised by the Booby Moore Fund - affiliated to Cancer Research UK but specifically raising money for research into bowel cancer (which killed Bobby Moore at the age of 51)
The Bobby Moore Fund and Cancer Research Uk both welcome requests from would-be fundraisers and provide fundraising packs with ideas to help you get started. Click here for the Bobby Moore Fund and here for cancer Research UK.
The Bobby Moore Fund has a pack available that will help people to raise funds using the World Cup as a theme - there is a quiz included. I've raised money for that fund using football/sports themes and it has been very successful - making a change from the emphasis on pink ribbons, etc and drawing in the male supporters.
If you find asking for sponsorship difficult you could consider doing some fundraising to boost your total - it can be a lot of fun! As I said, much of mine is done online but you can easily organise an event for family and friends, workmates, etc.0 -
would it be ok for me & others taking part to post our links too? some people may only wish to sponsor people they "know", & after all, it all goes to the same charity. i will wait for your reply boglin before doing so as it is your thread.Cleaning the house while children are growing is like shovelling snow when it's still snowing!0

pdoff, thanks for your consideration and of course it is OK to do that - it is all going to the same charity and I understand that there are many posters on here who have been frequenting these forums far longer and more regularly than I have, who might attract sponsorship from fellow posters on 'their' forums.
I am just glad to get the chance to raise the awareness of this event on this well-read forum in order to (a) attract others to take part and (b) attract others to sponsor someone taking part (it doesn't have to be me!)
Do you think it would be a good idea to start a new thread simply for the purpose of listing such links to make it easier to find them?
Perhaps the moderators of this new forum might like to help out here by suggesting what would be appropriate?

K9cuddles, this board was set up to allow people to raise funds for UK charities within certain guidelines. If you have set up a Justgiving fundraising web page (there are instructions on how to do this on the Race for Life site) then you are allowed to post the link to your Justgiving page; what we aren't allowed to do is to ask for sponsorship to be paid to us directly.
"2. Any sponsorship links must go via the legitimate online charity sponsorship sources such as Justgiving. Direct soliciting for money or sponsorship by any other method isn't permitted as it would be open to abuse."
I hope that this helps you.
Lots of luck in your first Race for Life!
