Hi
B&Q recently were doing MacPhersons eclipse white & magnolia (I think). You might just get away with 1 coat if you use these. I buy 10Lt tubs from my decorator trade counter for about £17. Also the B&Q trade magnolia is pretty good, not sure about its 1-coat-ability though. Neither is suitable for exterior painting. For that try Sandtex.
The most difficult colours to 'block out' are reds/deep purples/deep pinks. The eclipse paints will take 2 coats on these, but on just about everything else I can get away with a single coat.
Just a point to note but trade paint is a very different beast to retail Dulux or even the Crown paint thats sold cheaply at the DIY sheds. Above all though never ever use the B&Q value its a complete waste of time & money.

In my experience, B & Q magnolia value paint has been great. No problems with it whatsoever.0 -

Hi
Guess it depends on what you are trying to cover & how much time you have. If its your own home and you have plenty of time to give several coats then maybe you'd be prepared to buy it. Personally I wouldn't use it under any circumstances, but not everyone's circumstances are mine.;)
But the OP did say he's looking for a 1 coat solution. I've tried many paints over the years & work in the trade. The only emulsion paint that might do (at a reasonable price) is the MacPherson's eclipse.

Thanks for all the comments. No I'm not going to live in the house and yes, obviously I will use masonry paint for the exterior. At the moment I've got some Wickes trade and will let you know how that goes. I'm doing 2 coats where needed.
Next job will be new kitchen and bathroom, oh and I want to put another cloakroom in where I'm taking the water tank out of. It's a bungalow, by the way. Any ideas welcome and much appreciated.0 -
Well, recently I bought a tub of white b&q value paint for about 3.99 - I think it was 2.5 litres, I bought it for ceilings. It was very watery though! I was also going to buy the magnolia from there too at the same time in the 10l tub for 10.99, but by chance on the end of an aisle they had crown magnolia for 10.49 I think (cheaper than the value stuff) so I bought that instead! I expected the crown stuff to be better and it was. I needed 2 coats on most of the house I was painting, and 3 coats on blue room and some dark red stripy wallpaper. I used 2 of the big tubs for a 2 bedroom new-build sized house.
As other posters have said, don't use this outside - I know homebase do their own outside paint quite cheap I expect B&Q etc do too.
As for Dulux hessian paint, someone posted that on hotukdeals today 10litre tub for about £16. http://www.hotukdeals.com/item/438794/10-litre-dulux-emulsion-in-calico-h/ it was at b&q
 OMG I had better stock up. The entire downstairs of my house (and my last two houses) are Natural Hessian and Natural Calico. Noooooo they can't discontinue it!0 -

Just because the retailer might be discontinuing it it doesn't mean that Dulux are. In any case you can get paint mixed to whatever colour you like these days. Just take along a sample - get them to measure the chroma on their magic little machine, tell the mixer and voila - here comes the colour you want.
Bargain and quick have dumped the Dulux Trade Range (apart from magnolia and white) some time ago and substituted the Dulux Tailor Made Range. You can virtually any colour you like in that. Being a cynic though I suspect the decision had a lot to do with margins than anything else.

10l paint for £10 is know as 10 coat paint....
go to a proper trade suppler in your area and speak to them
I agree! I used the B&Q value paint in white on a small room, it took about 6 coats and I still notice some of the colour from underneath. It was a yellow colour but I wouldnt say it was so bright to need 6 coats. It also used over half of the tub so I will never be buying it again! Its worth paying a bit more for decent stuff I think.Weight loss November 09-January 10: [STRIKE]13lbs[/STRIKE] [STRIKE]20lbs[/STRIKE] 27lbs! :j0
