I have just replaced my old 2G phone with a 3G one. I have been with orange PAYG for years and put my old SIM in the new phone and binned the new one. Do i need to tell orange i have done this to get the 3G to work?

To get 3G you need a 3g sim, if you've had your old one for years it isn't 3G.

I'm not sure what the current position is on this, it used to be you could only get a new 3G sim if you bought a 3G payg phone from Orange? You'd need to call CS and see if they'll send you a new sim...
