re comments about passing over a student for someone who shows long term commitment. From what I've seen the new recruits in Morrisons are 16 year olds all in their first student job, courtesy of mum or dad- I even heard one of them refer to her colleague as 'Mum'
A lot of you seem to think it's ok for firms to apply their own judgement in who gets a job. Not someone who's going off to Uni etc-I hope you are never at the receiving end of such an attitude.
Think I'll maintain my integrity and I hope so will my children. Fair enough if others want to use who they know to get a job. I'd like to get it on merit after a fair chance-shelf filler or CEO.0 -
Is it just me or is rb1s self righteous demeanor staggering.0

yeah you're probably right. Time to let it go.Thanks for the advice everyone0

Not all that long ago it was considered the right thing to do to 'get your relative in' at your place of work.
I'm not suggesting that ideally it should be that way now, but things are not ideal and in a recession firms will have their own selection criteria, in fact I think they always have.
A friend of mine who used to select candidates for interview told me she never read any CVs that had come from Jobcentre candidates, just binned them automatically. Another person told me she only read handwritten ones. Somebody else told me she only read typed ones.
So Morrisons selecting on family connection is nothing new. Their only problem appears to be being honest about it.(AKA HRH_MUngo)

Imagine someone holding forth on biology whose only knowledge of the subject is the Book of British Birds, and you have a rough idea of what it feels like to read Richard Dawkins on theology: Terry Eagleton0 -
Employers who use the disability symbol make five commitments regarding recruitment, training, retention, consultation and disability awareness.
These commitments are:- to interview all disabled applicants who meet the minimum criteria for a job vacancy and to consider them on their abilities
- to discuss with disabled employees, at any time but at least once a year, what both parties can do to make sure disabled employees can develop and use their abilities
- to make every effort when employees become disabled to make sure they stay in employment
- to take action to ensure that all employees develop the appropriate level of disability awareness needed to make these commitments work
- to review these commitments each year and assess what has been achieved, plan ways to improve on them and let employees and Jobcentre Plus know about progress and future plans
The ironic thing is that good employers will already be doing all of the above for all employees without needing to apply to some scheme. If you don't stand for something, you'll fall for anything0 -
Some funny attitudes here- if not double standards. Everyone agrees employment opportunuties should be 'fair', but their definition of 'fair' is subjective. Fair means everyone has an equal chance. How can you have an equal chance of a job if you don't know about the job because it wasn't advertised. University students don't just want 'beer money' as someone called it. My daughter doesn't drink anyway. Student loans are hideous and students these days need a source of income to survive or be saddled with a large debt for many years to come.
I know these these practices go on in business but that doesn't make them right. It reminds me of the MP expenses row- they claimed that wasn't illegal either...........
ps Please stop assuming my husband was making some kind of crusade when all he did was ask the manager about vacancies. It was an opportune moment to ask the guy as he was hovering round the tills. We're only trying to help her out a bit as we're in there more than she is (or were)
I haven't seen anyone suggest your husband was "making some kind of crusade". I have seen a few people attempt to help you by pointing out that what he did might end up being counter productive. If you don't stand for something, you'll fall for anything0 -

When I was a student I signed up with an agency to get some work in my uni holidays. Because I had no office experience I did what is loosely termed as 'industrial work'. It usually involves some kind of warehouse or factory work such as packing.
I would definitely recommend it, I had more fun doing that than in any other job since! The work is easy, you can wear what you want, listen to the radio and there are no customers. Usually you are working with other people in the same boat so its really friendly and you don't feel like the new person.
Also if it is any consolation I had an interview at morrisons years ago and still didn't get offered a job, I think the woman just didn't like the look of me!0 -
