Morrisons jobs

Seems to me that the entire world's a bit c**p at the moment.
It may not be the best of moves for your OH to tackle the Manager about it but so what? - good for him I say. If nepotism is alive and kicking in Morrisons (and Sainsburys and Tesco etc etc) then wouldn't matter if he said anything or not, the vacancies simply wouldn't be rolled out to the general public - it's nice for your daughter to feel that her Dad is on the case for her.
I don't have any answers I'm afraid and this thread and others like it are putting the fear of God into me as I plan to go to University this year and wonder what the Hell I'll do in the long summer break.....
She should come to my nearest town - it is as though the whole retail sector is staffed by students (and no it isn't a University town - it's so far from it that you wouldn't believe). How about not asking for "student" jobs, just applying for a regular job?
Chin up.

If it's any help to make your daughter feel better (probably not!!), I have worked for morrisons in the past, left last summer to go to uni with the promise of a suymmer job when I return, came home for Easter and checked again with the stoire that I would have a summer job (yes, I would), checked again when I came home (Yes, I would) and filed an application form as per request, to be then told that actually, I wasn't getting a summer job because they've decided not to take on temporary employment. Just wish I was told this beforehand!!:j [STRIKE]Debt Free[/STRIKE] Savings Wannabe! :jCurrent problems: £107 overdrawn in bank, £112 in unpaid DD'sSavings made: £00

Morrisons will have a recruitment and selection policy. Has a breach of that policy happened - probably, what can you do about it - very little accept bring it too that attention of head office, who will no doubt file it in the bin.
If you are considering raising a complaint reflect on the best possible outcome for your daughter and can you evidence the information your alleging the manager supplied to you - hearsay won't get you very far i'm afraid and at this point your daughter has little chance of getting a job at that store.Don’t be a can’t, be a can.0 -
I've had vacancies recently and there is no way I would advertise them right now. I dont have time to wade through the 2000 cvs I have been told I will get. So I advertised on the company website only and encouraged my staff to spread the word - no Monster, no posters.
Not illegal. Not fair to everyone in the world, but I have a business to run. A "good enough" employee is fine; I don't need to sift 2000 cvs to find 'perfect'.Debt free 4th April 2007.
New house. Bigger mortgage. MFWB after I have my buffer cash in place.0 -
Thanks everyone but I just feel depressed by these answers. I know you're reflecting the real world but that doesn't make it ok.
*hug*
Sorry
Please don't feel down though, Christmas jobs start around September. That's how I got my job, joined as a 1 month temp in December (one of the last in) and have been there ever since, so glad I did as there is now a recruitment freeze.
With the school holidays there is a big chunk of time to work on things to add to a CV...it doesn't have to be academic, learning a new hobby or skill can help as well.
Start making a list of the recruitment sections of retailer websites...not many use in store applications these days.
Then in a month or two start checking them every day. The job I got only appeared online for a few hours, if I hadn't of checked that morning I would never had got my foot in the door.
So don't get down...Christmas 2009 job hunt preparation starts here :T0 -

One thing that really bugs me, especially in the current climate, is an employer who advertises they are looking for people but doesn't even have any jobs. What's the point of that? I spent yesterday monring in 'pleasant' conversation with just such an employer. Their attitude was appalling and they just could not understand why anyone would have a grievance.
All you can do is your best and make the application; if employers want to behave in a certain way then there's nothing you can do about it. The sad fact is that there are no laws or procedures to stop employers taking the !!!!, but woe betide the unemployed if they behave similarly0 -
Thanks for the upbeat comments from some of you. I don't work in business and I would never hack the goings on. Watching the Apprentice is enough to get me fuming.
Just to set the record straight. My husband didn't tackle the manager in the way you assume (Hermia). It was a genuine query about vacancies given there were new people being trained on the tills and my daughter had been told by the staff on Customer services that there were no vacancies continually for a year. Young people can be bit trusting and parents can wonder what's going on sometimes- it's instinct isn't it to step in sometimes.
Sorry but I didn't mean to press the thanks button hermia but I suppose it is thanks for showing me the attitude some firms have. Everything's a lesson in life!0 -
Thought I would add that although many retaillers are not recruiting some still are so not a complete recruitment freeze. I work in discount retail and that sector of retail is performing fairly well, so in some of my stores we are still recruiting. What I will agree with is the number of people applying, I recruited for a new store the other week with about 25 vacanices, I have recieved about 1000 applications and I am still getting application forms!
Where do you/your daughter live? PM me and i will let you know if i know anything about retaillers in your area!0 -
In the current situation a lot of employers can demand retail experience. The jobs are probably going to people who have worked in shops for years, and need to feed families, rather than kids who want beer money. It might be worth going into recruitment agencies for office junior jobs. I fail to see how an A level would make her over qualified for a shop job, surely someone who has worked for 5 years in a shop would be more qualified?! If she has a 'I'm too good for this' attitude she won't get anywhere. And I'm sure people who had retail experience for years and years would be a bit miffed if kids with paper qualifications rather than experience were getting the jobs they wanted - that's when things would be unfair in my opinion!
Another option might be to go to local hospitals, private rather than NHS, and ask if she can work on their bank for healthcare assistants. It's a rubbish job, but my local hospital is crying out for people.
I work as a healthcare assistant and find it very rewarding and enjoyable certainly not a rubbish job!It takes a lot of skill, patience i rather think the above comment was bit off but that just my say.
Good luck to your daughter hope she finds a job soon.
Will speak my mind because that"s how i am0 -

Almost certainly a breach has happened - if they haven't advertised the the vacancies at the Jobcentre. They are a disability symbol user and so presumably signed up to notifying the Jobcentre of all vacancies.
Edit: subsequently could not find this as a definite requirement of a Symbol user. I last signed up to being/renewed being a symbol user in around 2000 and do not have the forms now!0
