How about some cash with a book to record EVERY penny thats spent and what its been spent on? Then you could categorically state he must not buy this or that and check the receipts when you return! Please do not quote spam as this enables it to 'live on' once the spam post is removed.

Really? So how much money do you suggest I leave the little darling?
I'm open to suggestions
Ok, putting my serious head on for once.
I'd leave him money for a couple of takeaways or if he chooses a few beers. After all, the house is his responsibility now and despite what people say, he is still young and us blokes are immature. Call it payment for house sitting kind of thing.
You've got to remember that if you have everything done for you (like my mum did for me) then it is a shock to the system to be totally self sufficient and while I agree that he has to learn sometime, you also have to take a portion of that responisibility for not easing it in kind of thing.
Leave what you think is reasonable but maybe do it on the condition of him having done certain jobs around the house eg; cutting the grass, watering the garden etc.0 -

No dont leave him money, if you do you might as well not have started this thread. He is 18 and is learning about life. Leave him ingredients eggs, mince - teach him how to make spag bol (enough for 2 or three meals) believe me he wont starve. Leave him mayby couple of treats after that get yourself away and enjoy your holiday.
And give him specific instructions that the house, especially the kitchen:eek:
must be clean and tidy on your return.make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0 -
when having to cook for themselves, you tend to find most young lads, will want quick to cook food, ie 'im hungry now', if its not ready within 5mins, its usually forgotten about, and theyve moved onto something else
i would go with microwave pizza like chicago town, pot noodles, and toast
a ready lasagne that takes 16mins to cook from frozen, will still be in the microwave when you get back of holiday, as he gets sidetracked by a bowl of frosties and the biscuit barrell
Anything that cant be held in the hand and eaten standing up, leaning against the worktop would be a no go
I would leave the basics, bread, milk, cheese and eggs. If he wants anything more luxurious than that, then he has to find the money to pay for the Mcds and KFC himself

Mmmm just thinking what the response would be if I asked him to mow the grass'erm what with?' or 'how do I do that?' or 'whats a law mower?' or even ''.
As for watering the garden even if he accepted the garden needed watering he would forget with a poilte 'oh sorry' :rolleyes:0 -
Going off what my brother can cook (he's 23, lived away from home for 3 years at uni, and he's still bloody useless), I'd leave some pasta and sauce, chicken breasts and jars/tins of curry sauce, boil in the bag rice to go with. Eggs, loaf of bread, and some frozen pizzas. Mince is a good idea as well, can do a lot of things with that. Maybe some potatoes?D'you know, in 900 years of space and time, I've never met anyone who wasn't importantTaste The Rainbow :heartsmil0

If its any consolation, have heard one or two friends moaning about lazy 16 -18 year olds. One in particular has a 16 yo who spends most of his time on the xbox - deliberately drags his heels about jobs and if persuaded to make a call, comes over as very dim/uninterested in the job.
Methinks he's going to lose a cable or two soon...
Whats his favourite meal? Perhaps you could leave ingredients and recipe so he can cook it himself - perhaps treat a couple of mates (without trashing the house!). Is there a relative or trusted person nearby (mates mum?) who could hold a little cash in case of emergency?
About time he learnt to cook, you'll be doing his future wife a favour! Please do not quote spam as this enables it to 'live on' once the spam post is removed.

MAE!!!! That's not good! But you must have let him grow up thinking that that was okay? Will not be sharing that with kids in the morning who will be helping do the weeding and gardening tomorrow, helping wash the cars, help with the laundry etc. (but they will get generous pocket money and be finished in time to go out with friends before you think slavery has come back into the ceebeeby house!):D0
