Options
Hi I have just come cross this software, but it looks a little suspect.

http://www.gotomypc.com/u/tr/affgb/46ukan2g/g25epv4UKlp?Location=en_GB&Target=mm/g25epv4UKlp.tmpl&WID=GB&AID=10360718&PID=1771098

    What makes you suspicious?

If you search on Google you'll find various reviews and recommendations, this one's from zdnet which I find a reliable source.

We had a fairly long discussion about this in work and the consensus was that it was fine if you were happy that the company could monitor everything you were doing if they so wished.

I'm not suggesting that they would but we're a suspicious lot where I work :)

Uhh... which company? The developers? They can't gain access to your system, presumably it has password protection as a minimum, and possibly some other security.
  • an alternative too: www.logmein.com
connections are usually to GUI and over http/https and you do have to know your login credentials too.
In the United Kingdom 200,000 people are bitten by dogs every year and some people will die as a result. Of those bitten, 70% are children... So the question has to be asked....... Has the time come to ban children?

Well, the only security issue is if someone manages to get your password, so make it something difficult to crack. You could also only run the software when you know you're going to need it. The software may also allow you to filter connections by IP, so you can restrict access that way.

I've ran a SSHd on my computer for a while, which is more prone to random scan and crack attacks than this software. However, despite some attempts, there have been no successful attacks.

Thanks everyone, I've looked on google a bit and it does seem okay so long as you take obvious precautions.
Might just try the fre trial and decide from then.

I'm happy to be corrected but our understanding was that you logged on to your PC via gotomypc.com's servers and not directly to your PC.

And never access your PC from a public computer, like an internet cafe, you have no idea what sort of nasty is hiding there.

Yeah I believe you're right zappahey. Your machine is accessed via GoToMyPc's website. I can see your concern with regards to privacy, it seems like a reputable company though.

You could look into other alternatives. VNC/Putty is a free example. I personally just use Remote Desktop built into Windows, and access it via a VPN. Not the most portable solution, but then again I'd only ever remote onto my machine from a trusted computer.
