Signal problems

Last summer (while I was on Orange) the signal/reception at home got worse and worse until I had absolutely nothing for two weeks. I tried some free sims on other networks and went with O2 who appeared to have the best signal out of the lot. Over the past year this has also decreased to the point when I get a flurry of activity a couple of times a day when texts and voicemail messages turn up in a big lump and then nothing for hours and all my replies just sit out waiting for enough signal to go. I don't live in the sticks. I'm in the South East, in a large-ish town on the outskirts of London, near the M25. On the mobile network' websites they all claim to have good reception at my postcode. Some of my neighbours are having similar problems and those of us not on cable/satalite have also noticed we are losing freeview channels that were previously fine. Last year Orange were incredibly dismissive of my claims and this year O2 just keep reiterating that there are no problems in my area and that it should all be fine.

Does anyone have any ideas? It is pretty inconvenient as I work from home and rely on my mobile.
On a mission.
