    Hi there,
It really is a question of education. What lessons do you want your son to learn. That he can enjoy himself for little or no expenditure, or that the only way to be happy is to buy something new?
I quite regularly go into my local Oxfam to buy fairtrade tea and coffee. I go with my son. If he has been really good he gets to have one of the second hand toys in there for say 50p. He thinks that is fab and enjoys the toy just as much as if we had gone to Toys r Us. I never go into those sort of places and if say we go into Woolworths to buy clothes, he already knows that he can look at the toys but I am not going to buy him anything.
It just means that when it is his birthday he gets a lovely surprise because if there has been something he really wants that's when he gets it.
If you need to have some more money, then I suggest you check that you are on the cheapest tariff for
    Gas
    Electric
    Phone/Broadband
    Sky/Ntl
    Mobile Phone
Switching to the cheapest supplier of these thing could save you more than the £275 overdraft the bank is offering you. And it would show to your husband that you are taking saving seriously.
It is very easy to be taken in by the advertising, that implies that children are not happy unless they have the latest clothing, shoes, toys etc. But my two sons have all their clothes bought for them on ebay, or were hand me downs. And they don't know any different. One of my older sons most favourite tops was 50p from a charity shop!
    Best of luck
I want a job that is less than an hour driving away from my house! Are you listening universe?
  • hi as a mother of two little ones I know just how you are feeling. Thats How I got into the mess I am in at the minute. Went shoppint, the kids asked for a toy in the supermarket,No I said but bought them a cheaper one. The next day they asked for the same toy and guess what mum bought it for them. They must have really wanted it as they asked for it two days on the trot ect ect. I have had my light bulb moment and my kids spent yesterday playing with two cardboard boxes that were in the loft, one made a television from it the other made a dog basket for himself (bless). They are 3 and 6 and they have so many toys they do not play with them because they can't find half of them because they are at the bottom of the toy box. I know you have decided to not get the overdraught well done but I thought I would just add my twopence worth. Hang in there the two years will be over before you know it.

What i used to do was have my family allowance paid into a separate savings account so that when the kids really needed something like shoes or new clothes i had some money put aside just for that purpose. i would have to drive into town to take it out so that gave me time to really think about whether to spend it or not. Of course i realise that not everyone could afford to do this but if you can its good to think of it as their money and you can save any surplus funds for their future education.

  • Don't do it! The bank are trying to do you a "favour" but it's only in their interests (litterally) for you to take an OD with them. Think how your OH will feel if you promised you wouldn't do it again and then you did. I'd be mortified if I found out my OH had broken a promise like that.

Your son won't need lots of things - just spend time with him! We bought some little easter chicks from the poundshop last week and today are going to be easter baking. We won't be buying easter eggs for ANYONE this year, they're all having home made treats instead. And if they don't like it, then tough!

  • I don't know how old your boy is, but what about pocket money? A £1 or 2 each week and he gets to buy what he wants with his own money and save up for a bigger thing. My DD spent money like water until it became her own and I wouldn't put any more to it, she became a much more discerning shopper!

if, for some reason, you feel the need to spend money on your son becasue you feel guilty about perhaps working (don't worry not going to start bashing working mums as I'd have to bash myself first!)

remember, what ever the age of the child all they really want is for you to spend time with them and do stuff with them ......what about getting those cake mixes (OK I know not really MSE and could be done cheaper OS!) with cartoon characters and doing that with him ????
