i'm sorry but are you crazy? it seems to me that you haven't really had your "lightbulb moment"
you are posting on a Debt Free Wannabe board here. in what way is taking on new debt going to make you debt free? (have you checked out the charges for using it?)
yes, you could lie to your husband so that you could spend £275 on stuff you WANT rather than NEED for your little boy and end up paying back possibly twice that with interest over time. OR - you could do as suggested here and put a couple of pounds by whenever you feel the urge to spend.
after all - when your child reaches university age what is more meaningful to them, the fact that the parents spend lots of money on clothes/toys long since grown out of and discarded or the fact that their financially stable parents have set them a good example on how to manage money and can afford to support them in their education?0 -
Everyone on this thread has said no dont do it pigeongirl and i dont think you expected them to say anything else but that. You know its the wrong thing to do. Once youve paid off your loan you can treat your boy without feeling guilty. I dont really believe in buying them loads of stuff anyway unless its a birthday or Christmas, cos this makes them expect to be bought presents all the time and they dont learn the value of money. If your son gets used to having everything he wants immediately then you could be condemning him to a life of debt when hes older cos he wont be able to bear to wait for anything by saving for it and out will come the plastic. The forest would be very silent if no birds sang except for the birds that sang the best0

Oh my gosh, thank you guys so much. There is so much lovely support on this site, I feel quite emotional!
You are all, of course, right. I know I shouldn't take the overdraft. I just needed to hear it from someone other than myself because the devil on my shoulder is whispering 'Take it! Take it! You'll pay it back...honest!'.
Am going to go out for a lovely walk in the sun and take my little boy to feed the ducks...with old bread of course!
I know it's going to be an ongoing battle to resist but I will just have to get addicted to this site instead.
Thanks again, you lot are brilliant!!!!

DONT DO IT!!!! I used to work for a bank, they want you to borrow, as thats how they make their money!!! Yes, you will have the initial cash to spend, but then you have to pay it back (and some). Your husband has been very supportive, and if you tell him you are tempted, maybe he can give you some extra moral support, and make sure you dont get yourself into debt again!!!0

If ever that 'devil' appears then you already know what is right thing to do and you should just give him a sharp slap.
Start saving some money and get addicted to seeing how high you can get your savings....or how low you can cut your budget to. Its much more fun than seeing how much debt you can get into and then worrying about how you are going to pay for it all.Baby Year 1: Oh dear...on the move

hi there, you know the answer but it's just haveing the willpower. I know it;s hard, but your little boy won't suffer because you haven't brought him a toy, your time is far more valuable to him, go to the library, go feed the ducks. I scour the freebies board and get all sorts sent to my little girl int he post, stickers, little princess pens and books, all free, she thinks its great!
how about doing some baking with him, go for walks. in the long run like has already been said the bank are offering you an overdraft now but in the long run they stand to make money from you, money that could be spent on your little boy.
we all do it, want to spend on our kids and take them everywhere especially when you hear other mums realing off their itinery for the school holidays and see no end of adverts on the telly . so far this holiday I think I have spent 8.00 , I have stayed clear of playcentres etc instead have painted, had the play doh out, baked, been for walks and my kids have been very happy and I have been far more relaxed as I haven't worried about money.
you've come this far , it would be a real shame to enter into more debt.
scour the freebie boards and see what you can pick up for your little un - and yourself at that!!
have a good day

Very well done for making that decision. You will definitely not regret itPigeongirl wrote:Oh my gosh, thank you guys so much. There is so much lovely support on this site, I feel quite emotional!

I get a real kick out of baking something like savoury muffins or pizza that DDs love and am jumping with delight if I get some freebies or books from charity shop.
Try to give yourself a challenge to make stuff or find it almost free. It sounds boring but the most appreciated stuff for DDs hs actually cost me very little."This site is addictive!"

Thank you for you post. I have had my lightbulb moment but sometimes I experience 'power cuts'. I think the best of us get tempted; I suppose I still need the support to keep me on the path of righteousness!

Hi Pigeongirl. If I were you i'd call up the bank and get your limit reduced to just £100. That should cover any emergencies, provide a buffer, and prevent you from spending money that you don't have. It will certainly help resist temptation.
You definitely made the right decision... plus it's a lovely day for a walk and a play in the park with your son. Spending quality time together like that, as you do, is far more of a treat than anything you could buy in the shops. You really don't have to buy people things to show them how much you love them (and that really does go for all of us).
