Preface: Things may be different in US, you may be asking in the wrong place. But this is what works over here.

A quote from David Copperfield by Charles Dickens - from Mr Micawber:
"Annual income twenty pounds, annual expenditure nineteen six, result happiness. Annual income twenty pounds, annual expenditure twenty pound ought and six, result misery."

    1) A good credit score is derived from using credit but always paying back the lender. So having a credit card, but always paying it off in full is a good way to do this.
    2) In a bank account you can either have more money than $0, or less (very dangerous). If you have less, your account is 'overdrawn'. The facility the bank provide you with to allow you to go overdrawn is an overdraft. They will charge you for this, so refer back to Mr Micawber.
    3) An ISA is a British account, only open to residents of the UK. So no. But there may or may not be an equivalent in the US. If you earn less than the tax-free threshold, you won't pay tax anyway, so it won't matter.
    4) The electoral roll (in the UK) is a list of all people registered to vote.
    5) I'd start by thinking what costs do I have coming - accomodation, food, bills, books. I take it you will have little income to speak of, so stick it in a bank and try and make it last as long as possible.

Aren't these questions you should be asking your parents?
I'm an Investment Manager. Any comments I make on this board should be not be construed as advice, and are for general information purposes only.
  • Why am I thinking "wind-up"?

No offence Christian. I wish you well in your first venture into the capitalist jungle that is the American savings scene .

Well, suffice it to say that I can't really go to my Mother for advice.

As a result, I'm pretty much left to fend for myself.

Why are you asking these questions on a UK-based website, though? There are plenty of US ones, not least the Motley Fool...
  • It was a mistake that I realized only after having posted.

It was worth it, though. I did get good advice from some.
