We wouldn't charge - esp as the work was underway. But then we are rather saintly... :D:D:D

If they gave you your car, then the approach is simple.

If they have charged you for a retest tell them you aren't prepared to pay for it as it was their fault the retest wasn't carried out in time. If there is further argument just pay them the bill (less the retest charge) and tell them that is all you are prepared to pay, will never go back, will tell as many people as you can and will see them in court if they want!

(If they still have your car, then use the same approach laced with a little more politeness!)

Thanks all, husband argued the point with them and they said nothing they could, said it was something to do with the paint work, even though the garage had it in before hand so they could quote and check paint.. so angry we agreed to pay 50% but will not use the garage again!!!

How do you know it was their fault? Many a problem can be discovered once you start to delve into a car's innards, that beforehand was not evident.

I only know what the original poster told us in the original and subsequent posts. That all indicated the delay was down to the garage.

You are right, other problems can turn up, but reputable garages keep the customer abreast of further problems (especially when they mean the bill has to go up!)
