booked with auto-europe last year, car was actually from Avis.

Prices have went up by nearly £100 to over £400 in a matter of a few days for the first 2 weeks in August from all car hire companies,

Auto-europe, holidayautos, economy car hire etc

Let me know how you get on.

Check out HolidayTruths website, there is quite a large discussion forum on car hire from Faro airport.

I frequently hire cars from Faro, and have used several different Companies. I now usually use SIXT but book through one of the Discount brokers i.e. moneysupermarket.com etc. I like them because they're a Swiss company and seem to work on a Swiss ethos. Also the prices are pretty good once you've used a Discount Broker. Three weeks ago I picked up a Seat Ibiza in Lisbon, dropping it back in Faro 10 days later. Total price £180.

Auto Jardim are also pretty good, although I've only used them once. I've found Hertz and Avis good but expensive.

Just used Hertz at Faro over the weekend. They add on a EUR 7.20 charge for washing the car when you bring it back. When queried, the justification seemed to be that others were doing it too. Fine if they flag it in advance but they don't. It's also unavoidable - it's added to the rental agreement (but not pointed out) when you pick up the car

Last year went with Sixt, no problems.
This year went with Guerin, was given a smaller car than requested.
Wasn't a major problem in the end, now asking for a refund from the
website I went through as Guerin were unable to give it at Faro Airport.

Word of warning, take note of Martin's write up about Excess damage cover. I went through www.carhireexcess.com and paid £15.96 for 8 days. The unlucky guy next to me got persuaded by the man behind the counter to part with an additional £150 to cover his excesses. If only he had taken it out in the UK first. I saw the wife's face drop as the guy somewhat reluctantly got drawn into "it's a good idea, isn't it" feeling.
  • I have used Enjoy Car Hire to hire a car in Portugal, essentially I would advised people to avoid them, you would be far better off dealing direct with a company at the airport (so you can see exactly what you get before you pay anything) or use an more integrated and established company even if it seems more expensive at first.

Additionally they put you in touch with the cheapest company they can find in Portugal (Air Autos) and then charge you for doing so. The problem is that Air Autos is then not so cheap and are also rubbish.

Any Googling of Air Autos will find plenty of horror stories, and my experience with Air Autos was the worst car hire experience I have ever had by some margin.
    The worst car
    The worst service
    and
with teh oh-by-the-ways ultimately not that cheap

In summary I would avoid Enjoy Car Hire, as they are not as cheap as they seem and I would very very strongly advise anyone to avoid Air Autos in Portugal.

I have learned my lesson, I wish anyone else the benefit of my experience.
