Previous tenant's contract...

I've just moved into a rented property and I have a feeling the previous tenant hasn't ended their contract with Pipex who must have been supplying cable as BT have confirmed their line at the flat is disconnected.

I spoke to Pipex as I thought it would just be easier to go with them as they already supply the flat, but they said without knowing the phone number of the property, they can't discuss setting up internet access with me and I don't know the number so my question is, if I go to BT and ask them to connect the BT line (for their extortionate fee!) and go ahead with broadband etc with them, will I then get into trouble with Pipex for potentially ending their contract on the property even though it was nothing to do with me?

I'm really clueless about all this and have been going round in circles for days. I tried Virgin's non-BT line option but fibre optic cabling hasn't made it to my area so they can't help me.

Sorry if this isn't v clear but any advice appreciated!

First of all Pipex do not do Cable.

If you get a new number from BT, it should not be affected by any old Broadband that was on the previous number.

So you should be able to choose any BB supplier.

Thanks for clarifying! I met the old tenant briefly when I viewed the flat and he said something about not wanting to pay BT's fee to reinstate the line so he just went with Pipex which I assumed meant he didn't bother with a line but obviously I was wrong.

Will give BT a call. I guess if his account is still active with Pipex at the property, they'll have to chase him about it!

    Thanks for your help.

If Pipex were supplying the broadband and it has not been cancelled, then there will be a tag on the line which you will have to get removed before you can switch the bb to any other supplier.

Ah... technically not correct :) Pipex/Tiscali (now owned by CarPhoneWarehouse YUCK!) do provide internet through cable - but in limited areas. This is also how they can provide their TV service :)

Personally I'd send a recorded letter to their office in Aylesbury advising that you are the new tenant in property x and that you believe they supply the line into that property for the previous tennant. This you'd like them to cease the line immediately to enable you to connect your own service up.
Recorded letter though... always helps ;)

They dont, and Tiscali TV is not delivered by cable, it is delivered over a BT phone line, using adsl.
