Anyone had probs cancelling yell.com d/debit

Hi guys just wondered if any one has tried to cancel direct debit with yell.com. This is my 2 nd year with them and i refused to do it again this year but a guy called Julian kept ringing me up and convincing me i need it and blinding me with all the stats. He kept saying he'd give me a week and then he would constantly ring so i ignored him and hoped he'e go a way bu then he was waiting at the bottom of my drive one lunch when i returned from the school run. Somehow managed to agree to bare minimum and just advertise in the book. He went back to car and then knocked on with that agreement but when he came back he had done me a fandangled (so he said ) contract that included yell.com. signed just to get rid. this week I emailed them to say i needed to stop my D/D as i was splitting from hubby and have money probs. Thinking I'd still pay my monthly D/D for the book and they would take me off the website immediately but this is the reply i just got:
Thank you for your email. I am sorry to learn that you wish to cancel
your advertising.

Whilst I fully appreciate your concern, I feel that I should explain that
when an advertiser signs an order for Yell.com advertising the contract
entered into is for the minimum period of twelve months.

I am therefore unable to carry out your request and you will still be
liable to pay for the whole contractual period.

After you July payment you will have a balance of £158.64 for your
Yell.com advertising and £45.56 for your Yellow Pages advertising. If
you no longer wish to pay for this by direct debit then payment in full
will be due.

Should you have any further enquiries please call our Customer Service
Team on 0800 555 444.

Kind Regards,
Yell Customer Service Team
Does anyone know if this is legal! many thanks:rolleyes:

  • I'm just in my 1st year, but i know that it is a minimum 12 month contract. I did read the terms and conditions and you can't get out of the contract unless, as they say, you pay in full. :(

I think they are going out of business soon as they are billions in debt!, Just cancel it and let them if they do take you to court.

I would refuse on the grounds that you were harrassed into signing the contract - him waiting for you rather than going through the usual procedure is harrassment as far as I'm concerned.

Thanks guys i know it is tricky and I may need to remortgage next year so don't want it to affect my credit history. I just signed it on the doorstep just to get rid of him thinking I would cancel later, think he has left the company now but he pastered me for weeks and weeks and then shocked me when I saw him on the drive...Used all his charm!!! will write back to them now!

You can get a free 'basic' ad put in Yell and the Yellow pages ( and other directories, too) just get in touch with them and say which section you'd like to be in. Think the free Yell ad can be put in at any time but you need to get in touch with the other directories before they are printed each year.

I've got to agree with you about the heavy-handed selling techniques from yell, too. We received a call some months ago from a rep asking if we wanted to continue with our advertising. I knew that it was some months before we needed to decide so, I told him I couldn't talk as I was in a meeting and that we'd be in touch. However, the guy was very pushy saying I had to make a decision then. I kept insisting that I had to go as I was in the meeting and eventually got off the phone, only for him to ring back two minutes later! Had another call from them last week asking if we'd be renewing our advertising with them but told them they'd have to be offering very good deals.
Life's too short for wasting on ifs and might have beens...........
