going ex directory for mobile numbers?

I'm confused about the move to create a directory of mobile nos. I've been getting emails from friends suggesting I sign up to go ex directory. However the way you request going ex directory is via the company that is creating the directory.

I don't want to receive cold calls etc on my mobile. I am with TPS and still receive them on the landline! Do people recommend registering as ex directory? It seems you have to do this now or never (?).
