I actually have a similar query to this. I was under the impression that the cakes at the stores above was fruit. We would much rather prefer sponge or chocolate. Any suggestions?

Waitrose Entertaining at Home do a lovely sponge cake. In vanilla or chocolate and iced in white fondant icing. I had one for my birthday and justy bought a cake topper on ebay.

It was £15 and tasted divine. They do them in different sizes.

I think the cake is well and truly eaten, and the top layer for christening is probably gone by now too:rotfl:

I know this post is old, but it is still good, as I am getting married and have a tight budget and am in desperate need of advice, which this post has given me....although links could be updated. Anyone got anything new to add for DIY wedding cakes?

    Thanks x

We did our whole wedding on a very tight budget. FIL made a cupcake stand from different sized circles of mdf, painted and edged with chocolate brown coloured ribbon. MIL made 120 beautiful chocolate cakes with white icing and a hersheys kiss on top. we brought an M&S sponge as a top cake as we still wanted to cut one. We also had a fruit cake on a separate stand on a side table with the guest book as lots of the older relatives had requested fruit cake. The whole lots was gobbled up!

We also had a cake topper made by a jewellery designer for £15. It was made of silver wire and clear and chocolate brown beads and was just lovely. She handmade that and all the jewellery for my bridesmaids and it cost so little and was beautiful. If only I could remember her name!Look for someone local in the newspaper i would think they will save you money.
  • i made a small wedding cake for my friends wedding. Just made a basic christmas cake with simple decorations, she loved it.

My sister made my wedding cake.
She made 3 of them, in case I didn't like the first one, and a 3 tier standard one (but chocolate cake)
