  • You can cook fish and chicken breasts in the steamer, and they taste lovely. If you have one of those tiered steamers you could do chicken with vegetables all in the steamer and then use the water from the resevoir (which will have a nice veggie taste) to make gravy in the microwave. You can also do rice in the steamer and it comes out lovely. You could do chicken and rice and make a nice chicken white sauce in the microwave (just bung milk, flour, chicken cube and a pinch of herbs in a microwave jug or bowl and heat for 5 minutes until thick, stirring every 30 seconds or so with a whisk). Or what about corned beef hash? Just micro some chopped onions for about a minute or so until soft and mix with a tsp of butter, some pepper and a tin of chopped up corned beef. Then microwave, or steam, some potatoes and mix the two things together with a bit more butter and salt and pepper - lovely with baked beans (heated in microwave). Good luck - I had no oven for about three weeks at the end of last year and it was really frustrating!

for another meal - many rice noodles can be cooked just by soaking in water that has been boiled by the kettle for about 5 mins. You could then mix them with some finely diced veg that has been microwaves with a packet sauce (or just even some sweet chilli sauce from a bottle) and voila - chinese stirfry variation :D

Following the sad demise of our oven I am looking for cheap meals for 6 (4 technically as the babies only eat small amounts) using just a hob/grill (mircowave at a push) The kids have told me if I make them eat Spag. bol. once more they are calling the NSPCC.

We are on a serious budget this month (about £25 per week!) which we have done before, but need a few ideas for replacements of my sheperds pie and cornbeef hash.

    Thanks

Don't forget to try freecycle for a new cooker

  • Obviously the normal jacket potato with beans in the microwave, which I am sure you are doing anyway.

How about other hob meals, you can make casseroles, just by simmering on a low heat, with a bit of meat and cheap veg adding liquid and cooking for a couple of hours.

Not sure if the kids will like this one, but it is tasty. Fry some bacon, onions until browned and add some shredded cabbage, with a bit of butter. Serve with sausages fried or grilled.

Frittata made with sliced new potatoes, any veg you have in the house, and meat or fish to that matter, smoked salmon shavings, or chicken go down well, add peas etc, and just cook the meat and veg first in a frying pan and pour over about 6 - 8 eggs beaten into the pan and cook on a very low heat until it has set maybe top off under the grill with a little cheese on top.

How about making a chicken and veg in white sauce with mash potato on top as a variation to the shepherds pie.

You need to remember that the humble saucpan is one of the oldest cooking utensils known to man and when correctly used it is a very economical servant. There are few kinds of meat or fish that it will not receive and few vegetables for which it is not adapted.
You should take a fresh look at your hob and remember that you can cook up some marvelous dishes on just a couple of rings on the hob.
All kinds of meat stews can be slow cooked in a large pot and most vegetables are suited to either boiling or a quick stir-fry, you could even get a boiling chicken from your local butcher and get a couple of meals out of it, not forgetting the soup, if you restict youself to just a couple of dishes then you will get bored very quickly.
As all cookery is but an aid to digestion, the operations of the stewpan resemble the actions of the stomach very closely.

You could try freecycle or a car boot for a stove top roaster. They are often exhibited at camping/boating shows and often people by them and then never ever use them, hence their frequent appearnace at car boot sales.
I have one for camping and managed to cook a roast dinner for 5 on a single propane ring, and it was nice :-)
