If I just wanted to volunteer as one could I just contact schools to ask them whether they wanted help or would I have to find a position somewhere and apply for it that way?

You will need to contact a local school, you will have to be CRB checked,
usually volunteers help listening to readers, with tasks like cooking, art etc

I know that our school, usually have them in the afternoon, as our TAs help with SENCO and PPA time so teachers are usually got the class and always need help

Best thing is to contact the local school, I would leave it until they go back in sept and ask to help, if you are willing to do it unpaid, make that clear, they will bit your arm off.

Right. I need to be banned from Yahoo Mail.

No more e mail stalking handsome chaps - that's not what I am paid for! No wins since Thursday and I am feeling a bit blue - is that silly of me???
Best wins: Luxury weekend in Russia, family holiday to France, catered BBQ for 20, Selfridges shopping spree, jolly to Majorca, £1,000 See Tickets vouchers, £500 John Lewis vouchers, five-star weekend in Provence!

Thanks :) I did it for a while whilst at uni but that was organised through them so wasn't sure whether just contacting schools would be ok but will do it nearer September then. I have a CRB thing but it might have expired, will have to check.
