iphone on orange network?

Hi guys,

I currently have a blackberry curve 8900 on orange with 600 mins unlimites texts and the blackberry bolt on package.

My question is that if I buy an unlocked iphone 3G, will I be able to use the web browsing features without being charged any more on my current package?

Cheers,

Nick

no you would be charged as orange dont offer the iphone internet package also you will find not all services will work on the iphone like you may not be able to access your orange voicemail etc

I don't really understand how the internet/web browsing function works.... does the iphone not use the same technology as the blackberry?

jamespir: A little more detail would be helpful.. what services would they be??

    nick_j_d, Here's what I understand:
As you are a Blackberry (BB) owner you have access to 2 types of data service.
1- is the Blackberry Internet Service (BIS)
2- is a generic data package all phones use for internet browsing.

BIS may use the same communication protocols behind the scenes but runs from specific Blackberry servers giving specific functionality as well as internet browsing via the BB browser.
My guess is that your 'bolt on' is this BIS service.

The bad news is I am not aware of a way to connect the iphone using these BIS settings. The equivalent service would be MobileMe which is totally different.

You could however ask to drop the BB package and replace with a generic data package. The settings for your iPhone are then:

    In Settings>General>Network>Cellular Data Network
    Internet:
    APN - orangeinternet
User & Pass - leave blank

    MMS:
    APN - orangemms
    User - Orange
    Pass - Multimedia
    MMSC - mms.orange.co.uk
    MMS Proxy - 192.168.224.10:8080
MMS Max Message Size & MMS UA Prof URL - leave blank.

This will give you standard iPhone 3G functionality to browse the internet, recieve mail (push) etc etc.. You can also listen to your answerphone!

One service you may miss is visual voicemail. The ability to view your voicemail and choose which to listen to by selecting the name. Orange look to be implimenting this service next year maybe: http://www.pocket-lint.com/news/news.phtml/23366/orange-launching-visual-voicemail-france.phtml

The only remaining nag I have on my mind is whether you have a 3G sim. If you have 3G on yur sim card your good to go. If not it's worth checking with Customer services and getting one sent to you...

    Hope that all made sense!!

In the same way that BIS is unique to a BB and had to be on the acc to use the handset, the iPhone has a unique acc profile and as only O2 offer the phone only they fully support it.

    Interesting feedback guys.
I'm using my iPhone on Orange and have most functionality. It is the 2G version but having developed on both handsets I see no difference.

Not sure what is fact and what is effective marketing at play here..
    best wishes all :D

If you want all the functions get a PAYG version from france, orange in france hold exclusive rights to the Iphone, so no need to "Jailbreak" the phone to get your orange sim card to work
