Like Stan I like to listen to the garbage for a few minutes, give them absolutely no info and then when I feel like it - just hang up!!

When my children were todlers I used to give the handset to them to have a 'conversation' with the caller.

This in the days when the world was a 'nicer' place though.

...and we all respected murdering GPs, paed*ophile priests (why is the word paed*ophile banned?), raping policemen and you could leave your back door unlocked.

Ah, if only we could go back :p

People aught not to speak to these people as it's not costing them anything really and your answering of the phone will mean more calls. If it's a number your don't know or unknown or hidden -don't answer. I'm sure if you get 50 spam emails a day you don't read all 50? Maybe 1 to check it's really spam. I guess this is why there's so many trojans being opened on people's PCs.

"Don't speak to strangers". Ah, I remember that too but it doesn't seem to apply any more.

I don't have caller display so if I want to know who is calling I have to answer the phone. I do 1471 if I am in the garden and miss a call and the caller does not leave a message on my answer machine but I never call back.

I have a friend who knows how many rings my answer machine does before it answers. He always hangs up before it answers then complains to me that I do not ring him back. He knows I do 1471 and waits for me to call him back. I never do as I say to him if it is important leave a message.

I tell everyone I know if I don't answer the phone leave a message that is what the answer machine is for.

I used to get a boss phoning up and saying someone's not turned up can you be here in 10 mins. That was why I bought an answering machine, to screen my calls.
My way of thinking is, if they call me they pay, and if it is something important they can write to me if they cannot get in touch with me by phone.

The Talk-Time-TV scam is like many others. A digital recorded message instructs you to press a key. To speak to a reprisentitive. This is a scam. T-T-TV does not exist and you wont appear on TV. Every word spoken is lies. The entire thing is a scam. Whatever you do they take your money. Yes it's illegal but BT wont stop it because they earn a furtune in commission from these scams. The free call is a scam and a lie. The moment you press a key your (redirected) basically you connect a huge charge number. So dont try to waste their time. Your paying for the call. I know they said its free. But everything they say is lies, so why believe anything? Listen to the message, press no keys and hand-up. Trust me. I bought a £12 anserphone to get some peace. The calls are constant from 9am to 6pm 5 days per week. It almost drove me insane. I hoped they would give up eventually. But after 2 years, calls have actually increased. 4 more came while I typed this memo!

Perhaps the BT representatives could set this straight and confirm that you cannot incur charges in this way from an incoming call.

Hi there, ok so BT has no control over marketing companies calling your landline. I can advise you that the Telephone Preference Scheme can prevent these calls being made to your landline if the marketing company is within the UK. You can register with them on http://www.mpsonline.org.uk/tps/ They do provide a free service.

Unfortunately there is no way that BT would know if a marketing company will be returning the call charge on the customer, the only way that you would know if you are being charged for the calls that you are accepting is when your next bill is produced.

I am the official company representative of BT. MSE has given permission for me to post in response to queries about the company, so that I can help solve issues. So let's get this straight. BT are saying that if a marketing company rings you, they can set a key for you to press which then means you incur charges?

    Hi,
With some scams it has been known for the recorded message to ask that number 6 for example be pressed to put your through to an advisor to claim your prize or free gift or watever they want you to think. By pressing 6 you can then be connected to a premium line number that can charge extortionate rates and in many cases keep you on hold. In most cases caller id is the best option, failing that an answer machine to screen calls may be the way to go.

    Hope this helps

Really Donna, for a 'BT company representative' to say such a thing is outrageous. It's utter nonsense (an urban myth - pressing the 9 key is usually mentioned - from about 2003) as has repeatedly been explained - see HERE - by ICSTIS (the predecessor to PhonePayPlus).
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.
