Virgin Landline sockets - want cheaper broadband who can I sign up to?!?!

Hi all

A friend of mine had Virgin Media install telephone landline sockets and is using their broadband but it is rather expensive - obviously it's possible to get cheaper deals now but I can't seem to find a broadband supplier than use virgin (ex cable & wireless I think) telephone sockets.

Her landland is with Virgin but she doesn't really make outgoing calls as they use their mobiles.

They have Sky TV but to sign up to their broadband service she would need BT sockets!

She is currently paying £11 for the landline telephone (with an £8 per month option for free calls in the evening - up to an hour - so her kids can call her when they have got home from school), £18 for Sky TV and £20 for the broadband.

also, is there a way to get BT sockets but not get charged £150? (she has sockets in her home but the fee is for connection) I've been hearing vague things about certain suppliers or cashback sites giving the equivalent amount of money back meaning the connection charge would be free.

Thanks for any help you can offer - I'm trying to find my friend a cheaper deal for her broadband.

I have been with Virgin for years but have just decided to move to Sky and I also need landline reconnecting. I still have sockets in the house.
Sky will now do it for £25!
I just rang Sky and told them the cost of getting BT to install a landline was putting me off and they told me about their offer - much more reasonable.

 BT are doing FREE connection.

Both Sky and BT will only instal one master socket for the prices quoted.

Sky are putting Line Rental prices up soon, plus their normal yearly increases for digital tv packages.

My friend tried ringing Virgin to see if she can get a cheaper deal.
the first try resulted in nothing - I told her to ring again as call centers have lots of agents and not all of them are very helpful (I've worked in one myself a few years back when I couldn't find any other work!!! hopefully I will never do that job again!!!)

she did ring them back and got faster broadband, free local calls anytime and line rental for £25 per month - rather than paying £43 for line rental (no calls) and broadband as before!!

saving on close to £20 per month... not too bad!

I will pass on the info about sky though as she might still be interested - I'm not sure she really wants to be forced to use Virgin and have no other options!

    thanks for your help.

Virgin Media Cable customers can save a lot of money on their non inclusive calls by using 18185 via their 0808 Freephone Number.

I believe BT are only doing Free connection if you agree t a certain price plan where you pay £11 a month line rental and have to make a certain number of paid calls during the month. I rang them to ask..
If I didn't want to take their package (which I don't because I can get 12 months free line rental with sky and free evenings and weekends) they said they would charge £122.

It can still be free on a 12 month contract. Quoting From their site.

"Connecting a new BT line costs £122.50 (incl. VAT). This charge only applies in some cases, but before we can confirm this we need to check your property. Most of our new customers find they don't need to pay this charge.
If your home has had a telephone service from BT in the recent past, and the wiring and socket is undamaged and the line still has dialling tone, it's likely you won't need to pay this charge. But where there's no suitable BT line available in your property, no dialling tone on the line, or if you have been disconnected for non-payment in the past, the standard connection charge will apply.

Please note that some properties, for example new property developments, may have a white BT socket installed that hasn't been connected (ie no dialling tone). In this case the standard connection charge will still apply.

The connection charge covers engineering work in your exchange or your property in order to connect the line and is subject to survey.

If you order a new line online, we'll let you know if the connection charge applies once we've checked your property and before we complete your order. If the charge does apply it will be added to your first BT bill."

Can anyone advise the cheapest way to do this? Virgin's charges from my landline to a USA mobile via an 0844 access number have shot up.

5p connection and 2p a minute via 18185 0808 freephone number to USA Mobiles and unlike 0844 access numbers you dont pay if your not connected.
