International Phone Charges, Please Help!

I'm currently on 3 and wanted to phone my girlfriend who lives in Canada, so, I spent £15 on an add on to give me free calls. The add on said it was 'active' but when I used the number 388 in front of her number (like I was supposed to) it didn't work, so I just phoned her without the code, in the belief that 3 would accept it seen as I just bought the add on (mistaken belief that Companies work for us). At the end of the call I was stung with a bill of £40! I phoned up the customer services and they said it was an admin error on THEIR side why my add on wasn't active like it said, meaning that the 388 code didn't work yet they won't refund me the money.

I don't mind paying for foolish mistakes I've made, but this is unbelievable. Can anyone please give me some help as what to do.
