I have a wi-fi laptop for use on the couch, which I also plug into a wired LAN when at my desk. Windows XP is fine with this, it will choose one network link as the default.

One wired and one wireless network = 1 LAN.

Its just uing different technology within your LAN. Yes you can.

    Ok here's the scenario

desktop1 connected to desktop2 via wired lan - works fine, internet connection fine

desktop1 connected to laptop via wireless usb dongles and desktop1 recognises laptop through "my bluetooth places" but my problem is that I can't access the internet through the laptop. When I try to connect I get "starting RAS failed"

    Any help please?

So do you use ICS? Internet Connection Sharing.

    Is desktop2 same as laptop?

When you use the USB dongles does desktop1 or desktop2 connect to net? or both dont work?

Now I'm confused, so many questions that I can't answer!!!!!!!! I think I've jus about given up on the dongles

Desktop1, connects to internet via tiscali broadband
desktop2, connects to internet via desktop1 using ethernet cable (LAN I think)

Now I need to connect laptop to internet in the cheapest, easiest foolproof way to enable DD to use the internet but without interfering with the LAN I already have.

Does that make sense? Is it possible in the real world?

Just buy a wireless adsl broadband router, they will all work through that .. upto 4 wired, and as many as you want wirelessly.
