Yea i rang up about the dd guarentee and i was told it would have to be done as an indemnity claime
This is not correct. You are entitled to a full and immediate refund from the bank under the Guarantee scheme. The bank use the Indemity scheme to get the money back from the supplier. Ask to speak to someone who knows about the DD Guarantee scheme - the one where you are entitled to a full and immediate refund (not 48 hours later).
since this has already been processed, what should i do now? still ring and get them to stop the claim and then sort out the dd guarentee?
The indemity claim is what the bank do internally and what Barclays are doing is waiting for this to clear before giving you a refund. There is no need to stop this. What you can do is insist that you get an immediate refund as you are entitled to.
also what difference does it make if its an indemnity claim or dd guarentee? sorry if i am being stupid
Guarantee scheme = what the customer (ie you) uses to get a full and immediate refund of any DD taken in error. The refund is made by your bank and is immediate (no waiting).

Indemity scheme = what the bank uses internally to get back the money they have refunded to you under the Guarantee scheme.

As happens a lot these days, bank staff either:-
    A) Don't know about the Direct Debit Guarantee scheme and only know about the internal Indemity scheme (so you have to educate them about the Guarantee scheme); OR
    B) Have been told to avoid refunding the customer under the Guarantee scheme and to offer an Indemity claim instead (otherwise the bank has to pay the money upfront then try and get it back off the supplier).

sorry barclays never said i have to wait for them to have successfully got this money back, jus said it would be in the account within 48 hours

Sounds promising although you should have got an immediate refund (same day). Guess the 48 hours must be up by now?

i was just wondering, they then said they will contact BT to get the refund from them, if for any reason BT wont refund this money what happens next?

    xxx

Usually, for a claim under the DD Guarantee Scheme, you are refunded by the bank, the bank grab the money back from BT and BT then contact you to discuss the matter.

However, Barclays Manager says that the bank may side with BT and force the DD to stand.

My experience is that once I have had a DD (taken in error) refunded under the DD Guarantee scheme, the supplier has never contested it and has either contacted me directly to sort things out, or has just accepted it. YMMV

I have got the money in my account now, so i think i will just leave it as it is, but if BT refuse the indemnity then i should claim through direct debit guarentee

    is this correct?

No . Stop worrying - you are getting mixed up now.
The money is back in your account - deal with BT when they contact you and if you have a debt with them ask for a paper bill to pay it off (keeping your receipt of course).

Leave it as is. If BT were going to refute the refund they would normally have done so by now. BT will contact you directly if they believe you owe them money.

Make sure you have cancelled the direct debit mandate so BT can't take any more money. Also keep checking to make sure BT don't put the direct debit mandate back. They are not supposed to but some companies have been known to do this. Remember about the Direct Debit Guarantee for next time.

  • If you don't want BT to resetup the direct debit you can ring up Barclays and ask to put an OIN Block on the direct debit - this stays in force for 13 months and will prevent them from resetting it up during this period.

BT shouldn't have done it anyway.

A mandate is "one use" - similar to a cheque. Once cheque 100001 is paid, it will not be paid again. Once you cancel your DDI, you have canceled the mandate and they should not just set it up again.
