Hi, I'm hoping someone can offer some advise for my sister.
She bought a second hand Pugeot 206 (2001) in November last year. It was bought from a second hand dealership for £2995. It came with a 3 month warranty . 5 months later problems started. First she had to get a new water pump, then the fan belt had been slipping so had to get that fixed. Today she has found that the tensioner in her fan belt needs replacing as does the fanbelt. It's costing her a small fortune!! Obviously we know it is out of warranty but I just wanted to get some advise on whether there was anything she could do.
Any help would be great!
Thanks,
Tori xxx

When the waterpump was replaced, did they do the cam belt and tensioners at the same time? If not when was that last done?

Someone else will be along to correct me, but I think that engine may be prone to head gasket trouble too.

Things could get very expensive. Can't really say much else, a car must be fit for purpose, but they may all be common faults. Check out Honest Johns site.

Thanks for your reply.I will check that site out.
The cam belt was replaced before my sister bought it (November) That was one of the conditions she said before she would buy it. The water pump was replaced in May.
Obviously she doesn't want to sell the car as she would make a loss she cant afford, but she also doesn't want to spend a fortune fixing something that she already paid a lot for. She doesn't really have any other options though does she?

  • i cant imagine any garage would replace a water pump and reuse a belt

The fan belt an tensioner are less than an hours work

Alas, the pitfalls of owning a 2nd hand car. To be honest, the car is 8 years old and that
age is when general wear and tear will start to come to the surface.

Unfortunately, all parts for Peugeots have to be imported from France, hence they are more expensive.

If you have any more troubles, I would fix it and sell it. no good throwing good money after bad.

French cars in general are pretty notorious for falling to bits.....

Had a little 206 GTi myself, was fine until it hit the 4 year old mark and then I had no end of problems, mainly electric though rather than mechanical....

Not much you can do TBH, cars break down and they need repaired.

No idea, didn't know you got one with a jap engine. It was the baby one with 137 bhp so prob not.

That would explain how that was the only part that stayed in one piece though!!

Oh dear , my partner just got rid of a 2001 206 that she had this misfortune of owning,

I agreed with the frech cars fall to bits comments, every week something else went , CVJ's exhaust clutch brakes, rest of teh exhaust cam belt fan belt water pump the list was endless , costs over 2K in repairs in less than one year , car only cost £1600 and she was so glad to be rid of it, soem poor chap bought it for £1100 , he professed to know abit about cars so it was by his good judgement.

Personally i drive an 18 year old honda crx, sounds old but its nicer than most modern cars, teh economy and perofrmance is also much better than new cras + it never misses a beat, never had any repairs always starts and passes MOT first time, never even had any problems with teh electric roof ! i just need some brakes soon which are only going to cost me about £150 + fitting for discs + pads all round - quality car

Go Jap if you want reliability, peugeots , citreons and renaults i woudnt touch at all , even teh brand new ones, a friend owned a new 307 , enough to put anyone off for life.

doesn't matter how old your car is, so long as it is reliable and passes the MOT, it is a great car. Sounds like your Honda is a little gem
