MONEY MORAL DILEMMA: Should Fearne stump up for Reggie's music collection?

Did she ask to borrow a laptop or his music collection? The laptop. So, why should she pay out for something that:
1. She didn't know she had "borrowed"
2. Something that should have been backed up0 -
No Fearne shouldn't pay Reggie for his lost music.
It's Reggie's responsibility to ensure his laptop and its contents are covered - through a combination of insurance (for the laptop) and backup (for the contents).
The fact that the music has a monetary value is irrelevant - it's not unthinkable that there could have been photos on the laptop. They can't be 're-downloaded'. If he's going to charge her for the music then how does he put a value on the photos? Pull a figure out of the air?
It may be Fearne's fault that she lost the laptop, but it's not her fault Reggie didn't have a backup of it.0 -
There's no "you must pay" between friends. When he mentions the loss, she should offer to pay for it (being a good friend), and then he probably (being a good friend) says either "no it's okay, I should've backed it up but thanks for offering" or negotiate a compromise. If they're true friends, there shouldn't have been a need for him to ask in the first place as she would've already offered, and then he'd be lenient - partly because she's had that common courtesy.
Sounds more like they're acquaintances.
Pedantry aside, I'd have to say go for the compromise, split the cost: after all, she was daft enough not to look after it properly, and he was daft enough not to back it up. There's blame on both sides.0 -
NO WAY should she pay up!!!
If he didn't back up, it's COMPLETELY his fault.0 -
This says it all, I believe. Well put. There's no "you must pay" between friends. download all the tunes for free off limewire or equivalent. its free and illegal and no-one cares! no problem. restore his collection inside an hour!0

As a compromise, and gesture of Goodwill, why doesn't Fearne buy Regge an external harddrive for £100 instead?0
-
I think if the music Reggie had stored on his computer was worth that much that it was rather silly of him not to have backed it up. What if something had gone wrong with his computer and he'd lost it all anyway.:p0

He should have backed up when he was lending out to Fearne but since she lost it and THEN decided to do it in the library which means she could have chosen the library in the first place without having to borrow the laptop. If she was that depserate it might have been quicker to just work in the library than beg and collect someone elses laptop. If Reggie can't get the music back without re-buying them then she should help him buy it back but maybe they can work out how much she should pay and in instalments since it's not like Reggie will be buying £400 in one go.0

Actally, it would be illegal to download it from bittorrent, even if you own it legally. The hitch is that peer2peer software is 2-way, as you download it you're also uploading it, allowing other people to download it illegaly from you.
That said, I'd fully support downloading it anyway. Legaly if possible, but otherwise just torrent it. Its not legal, but given how the media companies treat people who buy their music anyway, there shouldn't be a problem.0
