Renting in Dundee - any tips?

I'm going to be renting a place in Dundee in September. I'd like a 1 or two bed flat, fairly central.
I've looked online, of course, but if anyone has any good ideas about agents/landlords to use or avoid, good areas to look in, etc. that would be great. Also any ideas about budget for somewhere reasonable (don't need great luxury, but somewhere at least in decent nick...) - looks like under £450/pcm should be doable?
When to look for a place, too? I was thinking about looking in early August.

I do not know much about Dundee but do know that property is at a premium there & has been for quite a few years. Probably because it is a Universiity Town & also near Aberdeen where prices are through the roof.
Start looking now.

Just because I am surrounded by FOOLS does not make me wise. :j0 -
Thanks. From looking online and asking a couple of LAs, things don't seem too bad in terms of renting - prices seem comparatively reasonable (though this is just a function of living in a more expensive area of the country previously) and there are properties available. The downside of looking now would be that I would likely end up paying a month's extra rent (LAs say that properties on the market now are ones they want to have rented by August).
You think there's a lot of demand for rental places, though?0 -
where will you be working? can give some ideas about areas to lookDebt free 4th April 2007.
New house. Bigger mortgage. MFWB after I have my buffer cash in place.0 -
In the Perth Rd area - I was told that it might be worth looking for a place in that area...0

I would advise you NOT to rent from RossClare Lettings - we have been renting through this company and they are worse than useless. We will be leaving as soon as we can.
I think you'd be safe to leave it until end early August - most letting agents advertise properties which are available either now or in the near future, and if you want to move in September you may be able to push the move in date forward a couple of weeks. The only problem might be that a lot of students will be looking to rent around that time but you should be ok because you're only looking for a small place.
Hope this helps!

J&E Shepherd are a big letting agent in the city, they've always got a lot of properties to let & seem to be ok, I've rented from them for 5 years now with no problems. they print out a list of available properties to pick up from their office every Monday, if you've friends in the city maybe they could get a copy & scan it to send to you? or the property search function on their website is good
I'd avoid Jamal Property World, my daughter had nasty experience when she was a student, with a gas boiler & central heating system that hadn't been checked or serviced in years. that said, it was a few years ago now & I'm sure there are a few horror stories about every letting agent
I agree the Perth Road/West End/University area is a nice place to be, it has a much more relaxed & cosmopolitan feel than the rest of the city
if you see a place you're interested in, it might be an idea to post the area (not the address though) to see if it's ok, or if you're uncomfortable with that, PM one of the people who've offered advice
she (my daughter) rented a nice flat a couple of years ago, but I can't remember the agent, I'll ask her tonight & post their name later0 -
Thanks - I'll take a look.0
