Dilemna - Overcharged by friend of friend.

Hiring a villa in spain from a friend of my brother-in-laws. He phoned us a few weeks ago and asked us if we wanted to hire a car off him for 100 euros.

Since the cheapest car hire I'd found was about £230 I said yes.

Anyway, went to pay him yesterday and asked him how much 100 euros was in £s and he said its 1:1, so £100.

Checked today and I think he made a mistake because its about £86.

Should I mention it or just be grateful I got a good deal anyway? I dont want to appear like a tight !!!! and cause bad vibes. It might reflect back on my BIL who was kind enough to sort it out for us with his mate.

How much is the insurance for the car?
    How much have you saved?
What would you do with £14?

Insurance included. I've probably saved about £130-£140.

The extra £14? dont know. Not that flush at the moment though.

So you're suggesting, I think, that since the amount hes charging is an arbitrary figure and I'm still saving loads I shouldnt worry?

To be honest, he first said 60E, then 100E because the guy he part owns the car with wanted more. Perhaps he was thinking £100 and just made mistake with exchange rate?

I would say it is closer to £90 than £86, and that would not including any loading fee if you were to pay by card. However many people (including some businesses) are using 1:1 when converting between the two currencies, so I don't think you have really lost anything.

That was just using the first currency converter I googled...

So, you reckon its fair to use 1:1 then and I'm just being tight? :-)
  • He'll probably pay you but there might be a decreased chance of getting a 'favour' in the future. The possibilities;
    - He perhaps was unaware that rates have changed so much; only a while ago there was parity
    - He knows the rates, but wants to make a bit of cash anyway.
    - He wants a nice round figure without the small notes.

If the car was at market rates, then yes, there should be a cause for complaint.

I would just pay him the cash and make a little joking remark on how 'the rates have got better recently, I'm not poor no more!' He might pay you back the difference, he might not.

Either way don't worry about it and enjoy your holiday.

A currency converter often reflects trading rates rather than 'tourist' rates. Even the £90 approximation could be generous.

For that amount of money I would just accept the £100. As inflationbusting notes, you could mention it, but they are unlikely to offer you a favour again. ;)

I don't want to insult you but you did ask(more than once) if you're being tight, I think you are being tight, enjoy your hols
  • Aye. Point taken.

To be honest, I'm getting a nice flat for a week for £200 and a car for £100, so its a good deal.

For the flat hire, obviously, the renter is £200 better off than he would have been. Not sure if this is cheap or the going rate.

For the car hire, it would have cost me over £240.

I did mention the rate when I paid, and he just sort of said, yeh, i went last week its about 1:1.

Guess I'll leave it for a tenner....

I wouldn't say anything because car hires in Spain this summer are EXPENSIVE! You got a great deal!
