I don't know if it's still there but there was a stall in the White Rose Centre in Leeds with a chocolate fountain. It had a sign up saying that if you stuck your fingers (or anything else!) in the fountain it would cost you £400 as they would have to stop, empty, clean and sterilise it.

Lol.... I remember that. I don't think it is there anymore.

For the record, I have just come back from our local shopping centre and my daughter wanted to try the Thornton's chocolate fountain. When we got there, this kid in front was stood right up close to the fountain and SNEEZED straight into it. Needless to say, Thornton's chocolate fountain is off the menu for us from now on - maybe you had a lucky escape. I also do not like some of Thornton's stores way of having the loose chocolates completely open on the stands (they used to be behind a glass cover). So many times I have seen people go past and cough and sneeze near em. Yuch!!!

Had a quick look in Thorntons the other day, hadn't been near the place for ages. I noticed they had a broken easter egg on a tray on the top of the counter for people to sample and this woman came in and she fingered several pieces before lifting the biggest bit she could find. Gross!!!! I'd never take samples of something like that. Disgusting.

thanks for that - your (or anything else!) quote had me laughing out loud!!! I am also assuming when you say they would have to clean and sterilise it you are referring to the fountain?????

Its a good idea though, maybe Thorntons should think about doing this - I won't be going near it again till they do.

I can remember reading a survey one time about mints they have in jars by the tills of some pizza restaurants - they took them out and analysed them and found something like 20 different samples of urine where people who hadn't washed ther hands after using the loo had then dipped into thejar - yeeuuuuuuuchhhh. I have not touched once since, and am also a bit suspicious of unrapped mints that arrive with your biill. You ahve been warned LOL

Ah Amanda56 you reminded me of a study which said advised to keep your toothbrush at least a few feet away from your toilet to avoid unseen to the eye droplets splashing back when flushing...

    That is rank!
Salad bars are rank too. 'germ ridden catch a cold bars' they should be called.

You don't want to know what "goodies" I found in the pick and mix sweet shelves in the gift shop of the tourist attraction where I worked.

DH saw a documentary which filmed what happens when you flush the loo. Apparently a large cloud of vapour droplets rises out of the loo and travels quite a long way across the bathroom. Moral of the story - close the lid unless you want nasty droplets on your toothbrush!

I have seen lots of horrible things in pick and mix jars. I also saw a bar man once sneeze in his hands then wash his hands in the ice. I never did have ice there again.
