When I did an internal transfer from current account to web saver last week (which I'd assume has the same restrictions as an IASA), there was a limit of £15k, but I could split it into <£15k chunks and do more than one on the same day.

Afaik you can do as much as you like in branch, just go with plenty of ID!

I went into the branch on Monday to pay in the cheque, got three different answers from three different people!

Was also told the same as by the Lloyds people - that the only way to transfer money to another bank was via CHAPS :|

So I deposited the cheque and rang up to get the money transferred into the savings account - this went without a hitch - will do the same in reverse when I need the money and will then write a cheque from my current account.

What is the transfer limit with halifax telephone banking?

I want to move £50k via CHAPS transfer and if I can do it with telephone banking then that's great.

I believe it is £20k per transaction, not per day. You would just need to make 3 payments (20-20-10)

I did this some weeks ago between current account and web saver. The limit was £20k per day per transfer setup. So for more than £20k you just have to setup multiple transfers and use each one for 20K, then you can transfer as much as you like in one day over the net internally from one account to another. I phoned up and got good clear advice on the best way to do it without incurring extra charges.
  • This 'policy' stinks. They say they have a limit of £15k per day on transfers and bill payments to protect them and us. However, there are at least three problems with this:
    1) There is no mention of this in any terms and conditions.
    2) They WILL transfer more than that amount if you pay them £25 for a CHAPS.
    3) Another HBOS company, IF, WILL allow you to transfer more than £15k with no charge.
Now, if I had known that I would need to pay them £25 to get my money transferred, I probably would have cleared it through another bank. Why would Halifax fail to make it absolutely clear that you are limited in your charge-free transfer amount? Why would Halifax feel that they do not need to inform their customers of account restrictions? Why would the policy be applicable to Halifax but not to IF? Why have I had no problems of this nature with M&S, Sainsburys, First Direct to name just a few? Why would they allow £15k by CHAPS, but not by BACS. Why would Halifax have a problem with BACS security, but other banks not?
Or is it simply that they are trying to prevent a run? Perhaps they don't have available funds? Maybe they need to purchase larger sums at short notice, and because this costs them, they have to charge?

Incidentally, when asked why I was not made aware of this policy, and why the policy was not listed in their terms and conditions, they stated "We do not have to supply that information"

Anybody help me with this one?

    Thanks Dave

    I believe it's £15k per online transaction.

You can do more than one transaction in a day.

This was definitely the case a couple of months ago (I transferred out over £15k in a day online), and I haven't heard of anything changing.

Yes. Basically all your 'facts' are wrong.

As previous post ...... you can replicate the £15k 'bill payment' multiple times. I've transferred £60k within minutes that way and without resorting to CHAPS.

As a number of Banks have an absolute daily limit of £10k via either BACS or FP ......... I don't think that's too bad.
If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !
