Ruined stainless steel hob

Can anyone help me. Ive done a stoopid thing!! My hob was greasy and manky and I thought that I would spray it with Adrit (Lidl) and leave it to soak overnight, come down in the morning and just wipe it clean. WRONG!!! I have completely ruined it, the stainless steel is now grey all over with no shine whatsoever. Any tips for me or is there nothing I can do!!!:o

I clean stainless steel with bicarbonate of soda paste which works well.
I've seen vinegar on a clean cloth suggested to work up a shine.
Also seen suggested a little WD40 on a clean cloth, rubbed in the direction of the 'grain'.
Don't think you should mix all 3, but maybe worth trying one at a time?
Failing that you could try contacting the manufacturer of the product you used to see if they can tell you exactly what has happened, which might give more clues as to how to reverse it.

Can you tell us more about what the spray is - what it says it can be used for and ideally what the active ingredients are (these should be listed)?

baby oil is great for making steel shine, not sure if it will work if the steel has dulled though. What do they use to make tarnished cuttlery shine? there must be something!

I have used stainless steel exhaust polish on my ss hob. It seems to give it a 'film' to help grease not to stick.

It works similar to the silver polish used for cutlery etc but is able to withstand the higher temperatures.
  • Thanks everyone for your quick responses, I will try each in turn and see what happens, certainlyh cant make matters worse!!

  • hello,

    Oh dear.........

I sprayed my Mum's stainless steel hob with some cleaning spray stuff and left it to soak in as it was pretty mucky. The house got very busy then and I left for awhile (2-3 hrs). When I got back to it and cleaned off the spray, some areas of the hob seemed to be stained/tarnished/darker in places than others. She is not going to be happy if this is permanent......... please advise!!

Rub it with warm soapy water then polish with a clean cloth, should come up bright and stain free, if it doesn't then put some baby oil on a soft cloth and rub in.

My husband sprayed window cleaner on my stainless steel hob once and it went all funny like you describe. I tried everything and couldn't remove the marks, then eventualy found Maas metal polishing creme which worked a treat and got all the marks off making the hob look good as new. They sell it in Lakeland (in store and online). I've never seen it anywhere else.
    Good luck!
