Malaysia Airlines

Having found a very reasonable deal with Malaysia Airlines going LON - KUL -SYD in August, I'm wondering what to expect? It's 99% certain we are going to be booking over the weekend in their Golden Club Class. I understand that the planes have been refurbished? Obviously, we don't want to splurge only to discover we're in the old style cabins.

Our other option is Singapore Raffles Class, but I can't really see much of a difference from looking at the pictures - and it is 400 pounds more expensive.

Any comments on:

- The meals?
- How are the seats to sleep in? We are going to be travelling for 25 hours, and this might become important.
- Service levels? I gather Malaysia has a good reputation for hospitality and customer service.
- Any tips on the best seats? We're likely going through ebookers, and I don't know if they assign seats when we book, or if we can choose our own? I want to be on the upper deck (it's a 747-400 for three of the flights), and will be a bit annoyed if I can't change in the event of being put downstairs.

I think that's it - not really money saving I suppose, but in my defense, the first price I came across on the Malaysia website was eight thousand pounds for two people. It's now a choice between ebookers.com and travelbag.com priced at 4100 pounds for two people return. Quite a reasonable deal for everything we'll be getting - I think.

Opinions welcomed :)

Recently a few MSE members have reported getting the worst possible seats allocated to them when booked with ebookers - I've no experience but it might be worth a search of the forum for more info. I used Trailfinders for my last flights (which included Sydney), and found them to be very good.

I checked trailfinders, but I'm unsure how it works - it seems a more personalised service, since I'll have to fill in a form and they'll get back to me rather than presenting me with a list of choices. I'll check it out again.

Just call Trailfinders. Always ask if you book will you get an airline reference that is recognised by the airlines' website or https://www.checkmytrip.com

August is low season for premium cabins to Sydney, many airlines did deals last year, Virgin, Eva, Emirates and Cathay Pacific are also on the route but depends where you want a stopover.

We're not terribly fussy about where we'll be stopping - we don't plan to leave the airport, so just intend to use a lounge to shower, eat etc for a few hours. I think Virgin are off limits as their upper class fares are beyond our budget, and the premium economy is not that far off business class prices with Malaysia and Singapore airlines.

We'd consider CP or EVA - I haven't checked the prices on the latter, but CP are a bit more expensive.

I'm going with Malaysian to Perth in May, having travelled with them to NZ a couple of years ago.

The service was first rate in economy so I have no qualms in travelling with them. Food was fine, seats were comfortable enough, nothign to complain about really.

Hubby has just been back to the Uk, it was a last minute booking ( day before) we always fly with Singapore as we think they are the best. We couldn't get a flight with them so hubby went with Malaysia....total CRAP!! The service, food & in flight entertainment were all crap, the planes were 'tired' & he said that he would never use them again.

Last week My friend emigrated here to Adelaide & Malaysia lost their luggage, infact they lost 4,500 pieces of luggage

I would go with Singapore as they are Fab & are using them again when I return to the UK in Aug :D
