Reference "The Cheapest Way to Spend Overseas" article the MSE as far as I can tell has never covered the possibility of opening up a Euro Account and putting some Euros in there to use on trips to the Continent. Anybody know if this is possible and what Banks would be best to deal with?

Citibank offer this service. However you need a minimum balance of £2k over all current accounts with them.

Have a look at their website.

Citbank also seem to have a good dollar rate (1.4% Below the official rate) and it is easy to buy dollars online when the price is right.

I reckon a FOREX account for larger purchases MIGHT be the way ahead - does anyone use this?

The FOREX rate is the official rate so it would be nice to buy today at nearly $1.95.

I need to establish if there is any problem withdrawing to my citibank $ account once I have made a purchase, having deposited sterling originally.

    Any FOREX fiends out there?

Took me less than five minutes to get all that information.

    Thanks a lot for that!

  • Hello,
This is my first ever posting in a forum ever!
Has anyone used or got any info on the Travellers Cheque Card by American Express? We are thinking about getting one for our trip to Florida.
    Thank you.

If I've already got a Nationwide cash card, does it make sense to apply for the NW credit card rather than the debit card? the cash card i've got can be used to withdraw cash and the credit card to spend on credit (restuarants, shopping, etc..) which I can then pay for with an end of month bill. i understand the debit card does all this (except pay on credit) without any fees - but i've already got the cash card giving me the cash machine withdrawel ability already.

Does anyone know if the Nationwide Gold Credit Card has the same benefits as the classic credit card? The only difference in overseas use I can see is:
NW class cc: commission-free use abroad
NW gold cc: commission free purchases abroad

They are both 9 months 0% on purchases and have slightly different APR's - not that this matters, I'm just after the best card for overseas spending.
    Thanks.
  • I don't know if it has been mentioned in previous posts but I have received notification from SAGA they they will start charging interest from the day cash is withdrawn from a machine abroad.

If I pay a large amount onto my credit card before leaving the country, and then spend this, (like charging my credit card before use). Would this avoid there high interest rates?

Has anyone ever tried this, or able to confirm that it actually works?
    Thanks
