They dont fall down the tubes, its fine. The use their back feet to grip the joins in the plastic. They're very clever little things and are built for tunneling and gripping.

Yeah a rotastak alone is too small but add it to a tank type thing! I'd say at least 3ft is needed & preferably 3 gerbils so you never end up with one alone! She must be really excited!
    She doesn't know yet!!! sssssshhhhhhhhhhhh......;)

I am now going to buy 2 though, I wouldn't want just the 1 to get lonely, the cage will be in her bedroom and after the school holidays it will be on its own for much of the day ( unless I decide to have a cuddle:D) so i think that 2 is the better option.
Thanks for all the advice given I do appreciate it:beer:

    Hi Gerad Way,
IMO there is no harm in feeding Gerbil Food to Hamsters the majority of small animal food companies do not even make a specific Gerbil food I guess they assume that people will feed Hamster food. The best hamster food in my opinion is beaphar care+ Hamster as it is a pellet not mixed so they can't avoid getting the right amount of vitamins and minerals. With Mixed food they tend to just pick out the bits that they like rather than what they should eat.

All I know about Guineas is that they have to have Vitamin C.

  • search for theguineapigforum, it's full of useful info :)
  • I feed my 4 gerbils WAGG hamster & gerbil food. I also give them dried dandelion & sunflower seeds for a treat.

Just wondering what other folks feed the gerbils.
  • Small pieces of toast as an occasional treat go down well. Just plain brown bread, or wholemeal toast.

I know you can give them little bits of cheese, broccoli, tomatoes, cucumber, lettuce, apple, grapes, . Mine love peanuts and sunflower seeds but they're very fattening!

I've come home from work today to discover that one of my gerbils has died :(

She was fine this morning, running about and playing and now shes dead. At first I thought she was sleeping, but I put some food in her bowl and she normally comes running out to steal a peanut, but she didnt move. So i poked her with my finger and shes freezing cold and stiff. Poor little thing. I have no idea why she's died? She was only 1. I know they can have strokes. I've had a gerbil that's had a stroke before but never this young.

Now im really worried about the one thats left. She seems happy and is eating and drinking as normal. But I know she'll be lonely on her own, as they were litter mates. What can I do? I can't introduce a friend for her as I know she'll fight with them. I'm worried she'll become stressed and die early aswell.

Any ideas on ways I can help entertain her and keep her stress levels low??

I went over to look at her again and I noticed a very quick raise of her chest and then nothing. So I took her out of the box I'd put her in and then she breathed again! So i grabbed my fleecey blanket, wrapped her in it and she wiggled her nose. Just at that minute, OH came home and ran to fill me a hot water bottle. We laid her on it and about half an hour later shes now back in her cage, eating cucumber, drinking and walking about!! I'm absolutely gobsmacked. I know hamsters can go into hibernation but I didnt think Gerbils did! Shes still very sleepy and dopey, so shes got a hot water bottle in her cage which shes snuggling up to. And i check on her every 2 minutes! I'm soooo happy!!

NO WAY. That's amazing. Maybe she got really cold and kind of slipped into a coma-type thing? Maybe she knocked herself out somehow? Maybe she did have a stroke or a heart attack or something. OR MAYBE SHE WAS FAKING IT. Hahaha, anyway, well done your little gerbil! I hope she stays alive now!
