BT wants staff to take 1 year holiday on 25% pay!

    BT might have a bigger takeup if they offered people the option of their job, but 4 days/week instead of 5. More people could afford to go for that.


    Other companies have offered that deal & got a high take-up.

    Which amazes me incidentally. There are certain jobs where a 4-day week would mean what it says. However many jobs in BT (including the one I used to do) a 4-day week would be a nightmare because no-one else did the same role, i.e. whenever I took time off all my work simply piled up waiting for me. So a 4-day week would simply mean me cramming 5 days work into 4 (inevitably long) days but only getting 80% of my pay for the privilege!

    Did they ever fill that customer service job after you left?

    so what happens if you they decide to make you redundant either mid scheme, or at the end. would your payoff be based on your new lower income?

    also, where would you stand with regards to things like CTC entitlement, as that is income based?

    Years ago I worked for BT. At one point I went part time - two days in the office and a day at home. It didn't work out because the mentality at the time was that if you weren't in the office you weren't working. As time went by I was given less and less work to do and ended up sitting at my desk bored for two days a week. Luckily their next round of voluntary redundancies were generous and I left. May be things are better now.

    Good question.

    I bet its based on the new salary after say 3 months.

    Then they will make a load of people redundant.

    Losing 75% of your pay doesn't mean losing 75% of your income.

    Your tax rate earning 25% pay will be much lower, no commuting costs, no presents for co-workers whip rounds, no sandwich shop lunches, no drinks after work, no smart work wardrobe.

    But, unless you intend to stay indoors all the time, wouldn't a lot of those outgoings be replaced with outgoings for leisure activities?

    its all dependant o an individual
    for me i commute to the other side of the city so it would save me on that.
    i barely drive on my days off
    but im sure i would replace those costs easily on a year 'off' ;)
  • i'd find this hard, i have trouble getting back in the swing of things after 2 weeks annual leave, i feel a bit rusty with technical concepts of my job plus i sometimes miss important changes which i missed the training because i was off

    I was a contractor on the IT side for my last 10 years at BT. Survived a lot of the culls but in April they actually broke up our team, sacked (didn't renew) all the contractors & sent the work to BT Operate (who were most unhappy to receive it....)

    I still have many many friends at BT (was there for 20+ years, permie then contractor). Morale hits new all-time lows on a monthly basis. It's not a good place to be anymore & unfortunately that's likely to get worse before it gets better.
