What if they do want to put the premium up?

    Does switching insurers pay off?

From experience the premium will go up at renewal with the co your Dad is covered by now regardless of whether or not a claim has been made. There's nothing to stop him shopping around at renewal and changing co's to get the best deal though.

We have house and contents, 2 cars and a motorbike insured and rarely stay with the same co at renewal.
I usually wait for the renewal quote which arrives about a month before policy is due so I know what my target to beat is. Then I use the comparison sites and find the best deal I can get for the best price.

Sometimes though even when a claim has been made you can get better prices from other co's, usually in the form of 'new customer' discounts. I had a fault claim on our car insurance and at renewal the premium went up if we stayed with the same co but shopping around we got a better price after the accident than the price we had paid before the accident.
I know this doesn't happen for everyone as it depends on a lot of factors but it shows it can happen.

Also my parents never ever shopped around at renewal for the house and contents insurance. Dad always trusted that his company got him the best price possible.
By accident I found out my Dads house and contents renewal price was over £700. I immediately went online and got him a like for like policy for under £300. He was amazed :D
When he called his co to tell them he wasn't renewing because he had got a better deal elsewhere they immediately dropped their price to £333. He politely declined.

If you have the time shopping around doesn't take long but *could* save you £££. If you can't save anything and the renewal price turns out to be the best deal you can get then at least you know.

HTH and sorry it turned out so long :D
