BT cancellation fee broadband? to talktalk

hi we just had a guy come round and sign us up for talk talk broad band and phone at £21 a month, half what we pay BT.
my brother didnt realise he had 8 months left on the BT contract, this leaves us with a charge of about £90

phoned talk talk and they said they may help if we phone when we get final bill, the guy also said the dont always charge you for leaving contract, they just say it to get you to stay? but then when i looked on talk talk website it said they dont help with final cancelation fee?? hmm.

we dont know what to do? does anyone have experiance with this?
will BT charge the £90 , will talktalk pay somthing towards this?

if anyone has any experience or advice on this scenario please give me a shout!
thanks!

You will have to pay the full amount to BT.
Whose name is the BT contract in?-only that person can cancel the original contract with them, not any other resident.
I have never heard of TT paying a 'golden hello' for you to join!

BT will expect your brother to honour the contract and pay the £90 cancellation charge. After all why shouldnt they?

Talk Talk do not pay off BT contracts.
  • thanks guys. i have also been told today that ofcom say you should be able to go to the end of your contract or pay of a fee of £70 at the most?? is that a lie??

i think it should be perfectly exceptable to change contract if a service provider is taking the p*ss with there prices, why should you be stuck with a product that skints you when there are better ones out there, i mean BT are totally over charging, its crazy.
i have also been told by talktalk that they can give me a couple of months free to balance out the cost of the fee from BT.
i also found this post about getting out of BT contracts, does any know if there is any credence in this- forums.thinkbroadband.com/general/3654201-cancel-bt-broadband-early.html

That £70 cap is just for the landline rental. It does not apply to broadband.

If you break your contract, then BT, like any provider, will ask you to pay the equivalent of what you would have paid until the end of the contract as a cancellation fee. The fact that someone else has subsequently reduced their price is completely irrelevant. You agreed to pay BT x pounds per month for y months, that is the contract that you agreed.

What would be the point of having contracts in the first place if you could walk away from them if you found cheaper elsewhere.

Have you got the offer from TT of a couple of months free rental in writing?

Of course, any ISP worth their salt do not insist on long contracts, they depend on their good service for customers to stay with them.
  • no not got anything in writing, they just keep telling me we will sort something out, im actually just doing this for my brother who isnt that great with these sort of things, he signed up for it when the TT guy came round, now im dealing with it but im starting to think it may just be a waste of time. im gonna phone them on monday and try get some sort of clarification from them. it is a great saving once on the package and the internet speeds, download limit are excellent, but the fee is annoying, i think the fees should be capped like for landlines.
i understand what your saying colin about contracts but i just think the disparity in pricing and services offered is nonsense, why cant these services do price matching or offer better services. also i really dont like BT anyway, ive had run ins with them in the past, so i'd be happy to help my bro move.

So that does not say much for Talk Talk who have just introduced 2 year contracts if you need a phone line fitted.:D
