Selling gold? (merged theads)

Hi all
What is the best way to sell gold?
Please bear in mind that we know it's value so won't be going in to Chav(cash)converters!
Thanx

  • Hi
everyone I like many of you have lots of old broken and worn gold that I would like to sell but am not sure about the companies who advertise on tv etc
Have any of you dealt with any of these companies and would you recommend them if so please supply contact details
    thanks
  • There are a number of scrap gold purchasing companies advertising on the telly at the moment. I have a small amount of gold I want to sell off. Has anyone used any of these companies? Which one is the best or offering the best prices? Is it worth the effort for a small amount (ie. a few broken earrings/chain etc.)?

    Your comments please ... :D

PS: I'm new to posting and apologise if this subject is covered elsewhere. I have searched the site to the best of my ability and can't find anything!

If you have a local market there might be someone who buys and sells gold jewellery, if so they may well quote you a price for the scrap gold.

Found this with a quick search, I do not know anything about the site but it seems to give a value for gold by weight which will give you a ball park figure I guess.

    Hi
If you go to the freebies (no spend required) section of this site then there is a thread about this, called cash for unwanted jewellery

    Hope this helps
  • Does anyone have any experience of gold buying companies, like 'Your Gold for Cash'? I have a lot of gold jewellery that I haven't worn for years, but I'm wary about being ripped off by these people. Any opinions?

The best prices I can find on the web are £6.90/g for 9ct and £16.52/g for 22ct.

Has anyone else sold any recently and got better?

Personally, I have used Ebay. I weighed my gold, roughly calculated it's value using the prices per gram and then set a BIN price. Sold all of mine pretty much instantly for the prices I wanted.

I tried an experiment today(yesterday)...I took five pieces of gold to town with me, to try and find out what i could get for it......

There was a thickish mans chain, a heavy initial ring, a damaged bracelet, a squashed ring and a charm...I had not weighed it, and had no idea of the scrap price...

I went into Albermarle and Bond and was offered £215....

I then went into Ramsdens and was offered £120....I looked at the assistant disgustingly....she asked me if that was acceptable...I told her I had been offered double that only 200 yards down the road......after talking to her colleague, she said..............."ok...we can match that".......WOW £120 increase .......what a rip off these places must be........

and a guy standing in another window next to me had just accepted their first offer of £150 for his......
    Couponing....."every little hurts"

Half of the people can be part right all of the time, Some of the people can be all right part of the time.
But all the people can't be all right all the time. .........I think Abraham Lincoln said that.

That is kinda to be expected. These places are looking to make money and will trust that the customer has no idea what their gold is worth. Any sensible person will weigh their gold, check the price it is selling for per gram and then decide on a price they are happy to accept.

I have got a stunning bangle I am selling, so I have weighed it, had it confirmed as 18 carat by a reputable jewellers, took it to a "We buy scrap gold" place, got a price from them and will now sell it through Ebay with the reserve price at that of the "We buy scrap gold place" (and they were pretty damn close to the right price for the weight).
