Self-select ISAs

Hi,

I'm looking to invest in a self-select ISA in the 06-07 tax year. Can anyone recommend a provider who keeps initial and annual fees to a minimum? Or has anyone seen data comparing multiple providers?

My feeling is to take out a mini cash ISA, probably the new National Savings offer, and then put £4k (can I do this?) in a self-select shares ISA...

Finally, has anyone any experience of holding cash in a maxi-ISA? I notice Halifax allows this but takes basic rate tax off any interest. Does anyone know of a maxi-ISA product that allows you to hold £3k in cash paying 5% interest with £4k of shares with low initial/annual charges? Not that I want much you understand...

Thanks!

I did a comparison years ago of several self-select ISA providers (too long ago to be of any use now), looking at their annual, dealing and any other fees. I've been through a couple of providers since then. Two of them are no longer in that business and one had such appalling back office service that I just could not stay with them despite their low charges. My PEPs and ISAs are now with iDealing and I have been very happy with the service I have received from them.

You can take out either a maxi-ISA or both a cash and a stocks & shares mini-ISA. The mini-ISAs can be taken out with different providers.

Sadly cash within a stocks & shares ISA is now taxed at the basic rate (but then it is not intended to be a cash holding wrapper). I'm afraid I don't know of anyone offering a product where you can hold £3,000 in cash and the balance in stocks and shares.
