The only place i have seen it is here.
Therefore it follows that lots of people will NOT know about it.
From what they are saying,it will be like a transfer charge call, they ask you will you accept a call from such and such a number. There will be people taken unaware by this because it is not widely known. Its no good saying-because I know every one else must.

Also,I would I have to give them my number too opt out?
Or would I have to check every week to see if they have recently put my number on?
    When could I stop checking?

I don't know technically how you opt out, but don't worry about it. What do you do when your landline rings and it's someone trying to flog you something? My point is that companies buying and selling people's phone number and addresses has been going on for years and years. The only difference as far as I can tell is that this is potentially going to apply to mobile phones too.
My belief is that this is what happens in a market economy. If the phone keeps ringing and you're fed up with it, opt out.
If you will the end, you must will the means.

I put my mobile numbers in this 118 800 website and you get a text code to validate your online ex directory application. It takes about a month to remove your details.

You can text E to 118 800 BUT it will cost you a price of a standard text

Last week, the magazine Web User (who rate this site highly), informed us about the new mobile phone directory launch next week.

    Today, the BBC reports it,

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/programmes/working_lunch/8091621.stm

The website is https://www.118800.co.uk I followed it through and clicked on ex-directory. You then enter your mobile number and copy a code. A secret five digit number is sent to your number which you copy to their website form. You are then ex-directory.

Seemingly all those organisations etc that hold your number, can now submit it to the general data base. For £1, anyone can request your number. Opting out will prevent it being distributed (they say).

We all get junk mail but can stop most of it.
We all get spam, but can fliter it.
We all get cold calling landline calls, but can stop them.
We all get doorstep callers, but can stop them.
We can prevent mobile callers, this must be good.
