Options
I got a message from a colleague about a mobile phone directory that early next week all UK mobiles will be on a directory which will mean that anyone will be able to access the numbers. it came with a link to get yourself removed - is this real?

I'm sure I heard something on radio 2 about it the other week, that you have to opt out of it rather than opt in ... so it may be true ... I'd have to do some digging...

Yes it does partly appear to be true.

Looking at this news article, your number is NOT given out, however, the caller to the directory services is connected to you and the caller is charged £1 per minute.

Before they are connected, you are asked if you want to accept the call.

I can't post the link here, but I did a search on Google for "Mobile Phone Directory" and there does appear to be one for 118800 which you have to opt out of ...

*edit* Shane beat me to it :)

Yuk,don't like the sound of this,if its genuine.Surely it could be used as a form of intimidation?
Maybe by defendants against witnesses in a trial.

Why ? What's the difference between this directory and an ordinary landline telephone directory? Opt out of it if you don't want to appear in it.
And if you're on PAYG and haven't registered your name and address with the network provider, they can't list your number anyway.
If you will the end, you must will the means.

Depends where they are getting their list of numbers from.

If they are "buying" them from companies that collect personal details, then it won't matter if you have registered any details with the network provider.

You can only opt out of a directory if you knew it existed. And if you werent expecting an unauthorized person to have your number, you might accept a call-whats to stop them giving a false name to the operator..

We know it exists - it's been on the news, in the papers and on the internet.
Take control. If your phone rings and you don't know who it is - don't answer it. If you are asked for permission before they give your number out - don't give it.
If you don't want to be in the directory - opt out of it.
If you will the end, you must will the means.

That's right. Same as all the junk mail we get bombarded with through the post and by email everyday.
If you will the end, you must will the means.

The only place i have seen it is here.
Therefore it follows that lots of people will NOT know about it.
From what they are saying,it will be like a transfer charge call, they ask you will you accept a call from such and such a number. There will be people taken unaware by this because it is not widely known. Its no good saying-because I know every one else must.

Also,I would I have to give them my number too opt out?
Or would I have to check every week to see if they have recently put my number on?
    When could I stop checking?
